100 shot on forged bottom end with rings that are not gapped for juice?
100 shot on forged bottom end with rings that are not gapped for juice?
Hello all, I have a fully forged bottom end with Mahle Powerpack pistons (-5cc). The ring gaps are not setup for nitrous. My engine builder kind of shrugs his head when I mentioned 100 shot so I am looking for advice. I see people running them on stock motors without any problems, so mine should be fine with a wet one correct? I have all supporting mods, fuel pump, injectors etc. Thanks
Re: 100 shot on forged bottom end with rings that are not gapped for juice?
Guys routinely run a 150hp shot on stock shortblocks, those rings are not gapped for nitrous. 100shot is pretty mild, builder already expressed a lack of concern over it, so what is your problem with it?
Re: 100 shot on forged bottom end with rings that are not gapped for juice?
Straight off the card that came with my Mahle Piston pack setup:
Street/Strip/Circle
Top: Bore x .0045
Second: Bore x .0055
Up to 150 shot
Top: Bore x .0060
Second: Bore x .007
Now you can calculate and see the difference between the two.

your builder is just covering his a$$...with a 100 shot and the proper support (ie. fuel and timing) you will be fine. JMO

That is what Nitrous Outlet thinks too..I would obviously have it tuned good. Whats the worst that could happen if the motor doesnt like it, would it send metal through the entire motor or would it break a piston?
Re: 100 shot on forged bottom end with rings that are not gapped for juice?
The worst that could happen is the rings butting and popping the crown of the piston off or breaking the ring lands...
Again, this is a question for your builder to answer, and if he just shrugs his shoulders I would go elsewhere in the future.

I dont mean shrug like that. Just said that it wasn't set up for that and the motor is tight, and if i want to do it its a crap shoot and up to me lol.
Re: 100 shot on forged bottom end with rings that are not gapped for juice?
I would run 150hp but not go over that. Just make sure the timing is being taken out, heat range of plugs are good and have high enough octane fuel. I ran 150hp on my motor with stock crank, stock rods and speed-pro forged pistons with drop in rings. Never had any type a problem, even hit it 2 or 3 times with 175hp. Looked great when I took it apart for inspection.
Re: 100 shot on forged bottom end with rings that are not gapped for juice?
i ran a 175 on my stock everything motor all this past summer with no problems and everything looked amazing when i tore it down to do my 355 build. you shouldn't have a problem with 100. especially if there is enough fuel. JMO

Read MachinstOne's post carefully.
It isn't a stock engine. The engine builder has indicated it may be a problem with a 100-shot. Only the engine builder knows how he set up the ring clearances. Comparing your experiences with a stock engine has no bearing on the OP's question. You may be pointing him in the direction of damaging his engine.
