0w30 oil?
0w30 oil?
I noticed patman using 0w30 oil...
i'm in florida, so it doesnt get REALLY cold here...
should i use that oil too? what advantages will I get?
I assume patman will be the man to answer this...

Hehe, you know me well.
I know a lot of you are thinking that a 0w30 oil is not necessary in hot climates, and you're partially right, you can still get good results with a 5w30 or 10w30. But in the case of the oil I'm using, there is only one viscosity available in this particular formulation. If you use the 5w30 or 10w30 Castrol Syntec, you're getting the American made "fake" synthetic, while if you use the German made 0w30, you're getting a totally different oil which is indeed a true synthetic, and is also a lot thicker at operating temperature than the US made stuff.
So even though you don't necessarily need the cold flowing abilities of the 0w oil, you're better off using it because it's simply a better built oil. And for those who drive in colder climates, this oil has incredibly good flow abilities in the cold. Even if your area doesn't get much below 10 or 20F, you can still benefit from this oil since it will flow better than a 5w30 or 10w30 synthetic would.
Now in the case of Amsoil 0w30, they use a better base stock and better additive package in that viscosity compared to their 5w30 and 10w30, so you can benefit there too, even if you run only in warm weather.
One exception is Mobil 1 0w30, which doesn't seem to show very good oil analysis results at all compared to their other viscosities. But then again I'm not super keen on Mobil 1 in the LT1 engine, it doesn't seem to do to well period. If you must run Mobil 1 in your LT1, go with their 0w40 over the other viscosities.

I found the German 0w30 at Autozone. I think there's a new look to the bottle, but I could be wrong. At any rate, on the lower left of the label on the back it'll say made in Germany or the US. If all they have is US stuff, I wouldn't bother with it.

Patman is this oil readily available off-the-shelf at local franchise parts stores like Advanced Auto or AutoZone, etc? What does the labeling look like? I've never seeen it.

So far it's only been spotted in Autozone in the US. In Canada it's at Walmart and some Canadian Tires.
