02 Sensor Placement. Does it have to be on the Header?

Im trying to buy some headers for my LT1 that is going into a 3rd gen. Hooker sells the Super Comp for this application but they have no O2 bung on them. Would it change anything if I just had the O2 bungs welded onto my X pipe right after the header? I dont think it would. Let me know.

Are you sure they don't have the o2 bungs? I think it depends on who you buy them from. I just purchase the Hooker Super Comps from Summit for my 4th gen and they had the bungs in the collect. However other distributors selling them advertised that they did not include the bungs. I don't know maybe it is a dealer installed item?

Anyhow about your question, the o2 sensors need to get hot before they work. So the closer they are to the collector the better. You can buy reducer with bungs in them, which is the route I would go. I wonder if putting them in the x pipe would cause a problem since they would be reading the same air(not bank specific anymore)? Maybe someone can answer that.

If the O2 bungs are welded in just after the flange that bolts to the header, there shouldn't be a problem. Just wondering though, if you are having the bung welded onto the x-pipe, why not just have the bung welded on the header collector before you install them?

Mines are welded in about 1-2" in from the inlet of the Ypipe with long tubes. No problems.

Thumbs up Re: 02 Sensor Placement. Does it have to be on the Header?

97bowtie, I know he didn't specify, but the headers were ordered coated. So, having the bungs welded on the collectors after he got them would mess the coating up.

You'd only have to grind a small area of the coating off, then weld the bungs in...not a big deal.

Question Re: 02 Sensor Placement. Does it have to be on the Header?

But wouldn't this just start the peeling process?
