$70 for fuel system clean..Worth it?
$70 for fuel system clean..Worth it?
My trusted mechanic down the street...I was talking to him about checking the fuel system. He said for 70 bucks they will do a 3 stage chemical clean of the fuel system. I use the little 3 dollar bottles like every 3k miles, but this one is ofcourse better. BUT is it worth the 70 bucks?
Car has 63k miles.

Just go and buy 3 stage chemical cleaning system from auto zone (the same stuff that your mechanic uses), and change fuel filter ($10??)...

Try not to get too carried away with the chemicals...... Most any chemical that can really loosen deposits is usually harsh enough to damage seals and o-rings. If you must use something, try Chevron's Techron additive, seems to work as good as any in tank cleaner and does minimal damage to the rest of the system.
The Multec injectors used in your car aren't prone to clogging as bad as some of the earlier L98 units.
If you really want to do it right, get the injectors serviced and then you will know what they are doing.

Just a little insight here...
I do have some experience with the subject (I bought the kit for FI vehicles), and what your local mechanic is offering is a pressure cleaning. It works well, and is the only way to do it when the car won't reliably well enough to even drive to get it serviced. Read the details and you'll see that the engine 'runs' on this can of cleaner, and dilutes it with no tank gas, making it more efficient. It won't replace $3 in-the-tank cleaners, but they're two different beasts..
He's most likely using a pressurized cleaner, like 3M's:

...the accompanying hose kit to screw onto the fuel rail runs $80-100...and the solvent around $15 per can. Similar kits with pump up external solvent tanks run more $$...
With that said, you could almost pay for the 3m kit for the price of a $70 cleaning - On the other hand, if you dropped $100 on a 'tool', you'd make sure you charged enough to pay for the investment quickly...
Just my $0.02
