I would go with cold air intake and roller rockers and springs, (a little over 500$ but not too much)

Well if $500 is your limit then i would get a used CAI. Some RR either 1.6 or 1.7. With the rr's you will need all the other parts to go with it. If you found a really good deal on some used headers i would go with that. But more and likely you won't be able to do the whole header install for under $500.

I did my whole header install for under $300

I got the pacesetter shorties off ebay, brand new...I think they were about $239 plus shipping. offroad pipe at a muffler shop cost me $30 including welding it to the y-pipe. A couple bucks for some 1/8" aluminum at home depot to make blockoff plates for the EGR, some pennies and red RTV (and the original fittings, removed from the hard line) to plug the AIR fittings, and some bandaids. Oh and a cheap spark plug socket I had to buy and saw in half to get some of the spark plugs on.

As for quality, they're so-so...a regular length spark plug won't fit on cylinder 7 without unbolting the header...I had to slightly enlarge the O2 sensor opening to get the O2 sensor in there...but after getting through the install, I've had no problems...besides a leak on both sides where the collectors bolt to the y-pipe...the plastic inside the locknuts the genius engineers included melted and the nuts loosened up...but now all is well and I got a good gain, for just under $300 altogether.

A pair of bfg drag radials. 300. pcm4less tune 100. Shift kit 100. With good traction you should gain .3-.4 off you 1/4 mile time. Then I would go intake, headers, gears, stall, 1.6rr.

Forget about those little sissy-candy-***-panty-waist bolt-ons, and pick up an LT4 Hom Cam kit ($470.), a Haynes manual ($13.) and put it in yourself! A lot of guys have posted some pretty impressive e.t.'s with this set-up for so little money!

Well after all the gaskets and other stuff needed to do the job it is gonna cost him more then $500. Besides with out all the little "sissy-candy-***-panty-waist bolt-ons" your not gonna see even close to the full potential of the cam.

Headers and a y pipe. My Macs came coated with an off road y pipe for a little over $500.

Geeze...Gears people, it's the single best sub 500 mod for ET's. I dropped from an 8.8 bone stock to a 8.2 by going from 2.73's to 3.42's in my old 98 A4 Formula, and LT1's will gain about the same...There are LS1's with no internal mods going low 11's in the 1/4 with converter, gears, and some suspension work, mid to high on stock suspension.

well if he has the 2.73's then yes he will definatly want some gears. It will probably be a little over $500 unless he can find a good place to do it cheap. If so and he has the 2.73 then the gears would be the best mod. But after that i would suggest getting a CAI. The car has to breathe. If he can get the whole headers with all the hardware installed for $500 then i would go that route.
