$4-5k to built an LT1. What to do?

I cant decide what to do. All Ive decided is the price Im willing to pay. I think that $$ amount is cutting it close on a 383 setup, unless I buy used parts. How much power can a stock crank/rods setup hold up to? Maybe forged pistons, freshen up the bottom end, balance everything, LE3 setup on a 355, and then maybe a little spray? Or if the stock crank/rods can hold up to it, maybe forged pistons, freshen up the bottom end, and a turbo/supercharger setup? I dont think that would make the kind of power on stock heads as an NA LE3 setup would make though. And of coarse, the cheaper the better Any suggestions?

I think the stock crank is good to 400-450.

a good combo around 5k is

afr 227's
lt4 intake
forged eagle 3.480
6 inch forged rods
je flat tops
solid roller in the 280/290 670/680
add a 300 shot maf kit
you'd be 700 hp or better

I would say that setup would be approaching $5k just for those items, not including supporting mods, and all the many many other things needed to do it. So basically he would have all those parts chilling on his floor in his house, and the same old setup as before. lol

I personally like the idea of the 355 and LE3 setup.

lol....I think he'd spend around $4-5k on the LT4 intake and 227's along with the rest of the valvetrain.

sometimes i forget that people dont have supporting stuff and are not as crafty with ebay and have the knowlege to build there own motors

so just have your stock shortblock rebuilt $1500-1800
add the 227's from ebay or on a fbody website classifieds $1250-1500
cam motion solid roller and solid lifters $600
stock ported lt1 intake $200
50 lb lucac injectors $330
58mm t/b $300

still should hit the 500 hp mark

Sorry, but you can't get AFR 227s and make them work for that much money.

I agree. It will cost you close to double that much for the heads
I paid $2600 for my comp ported afr 210`s and you will need a LT4 intake with them as well plus some longtube headers.

Re: $4-5k to built an LT1. What to do?

solid roller setups are pretty expensive and really arent worth it because the intake really isnt that good for high rpm applications and because the computer also shuts off at ~7000 rpms. you can get a hydraulic cam to perform pretty close to the solid roller up to that point. now if you have an aftermarket ecu and or a different intake then solid rollers could be a better choice.

i would reuse the factory crank and only bore the block if you have to. i would get a nice set of forged pistons and some scat i beam rods. get the le3 package to put on top and then run some spray. you will make really good power, but im not sure you can do all that and get the supporting mods to handle that kind of power for 4-5k.

a little break down for the prices:
pistons $300-350
rings $150
rods (should come with arp bolts) $250
block work (if it needs to be done) $200
turning your crank (if needed) $100
balancing your assembly (could be more if you need alot of malory) $200
LE3 package $1850
bearings $100
head bolts, head gaskets and misc gaskets ~$200
stuff you always forget about $250
***EDIT STUFF I FORGOT ABOUT***
roller rockers $250
pushrods $100

then you have to realize for the le3 package to work properly you have to have the following
long tubes
big stall (your sig says auto)
built tranny
36-42lb injectors
52mm throttle body if not larger
lower gears in the rear end
a good tune
probably a new fuel pump

you are now looking at more money then you probably want to spend. not trying to rain on your parade but dont think stuff is as cheap as some people say it is because trust me, its not.

good luck
Bobby
