This week I looked at a 1999 Z28 convertable white black top. Took it out for a test drive and got it up to 110mph.
when I got it back to the dealer there was a grinding sound coming from the rear axle. I got a call today from the saleman informing me they had fixed the rear end and wants me to come back and buy the car.
The car has 38000 mile and is at a great price $16,998.
But now reading about the torque issues with the rear end, I'm re-thinking the whole Z28 thing. What do you think?

 

Sounds like a broken rear.No biggie.So if the dealer put in a new one then you should be good-to-go.You should be happy that you have a car capable of breaking rear-ends!

Good point.See if you can use this as an excuse to get a free warranty thrown in.Maybe the dealer will give you like a 75k mile warranty with like a small deductable or something.Good luck.

Ok the rear end brakes I can deal with that. The car is just plan Hot! What are my options for keeping from doing that again? Is there a modification to the rear end so I can burn donuts like a true F-body.

First, I bought my 99 back in June with 24,140 miles on it. The day I brought it home I noticed it clanking from the rear when putting in gear and out, and when shifting from 1st to 2nd when you are just cruising (A4), Took it to some guys I know at a GM dealership and they replaced the driveshaft. Fixed everything, and they told me that some of these issues where going around and that the new driveshaft they put in shouldn't give me any problems. So that might have been your deal. I wouldn't worry about it, unless you do lots of mods (like over 100 hp add ons).

 

Here is the latest; last week got a call from the dealership informing me that the problem has been fixed. Today I went back to the dealer and test drove the car again. The grinding sound was still there. This is a christmas gift for my wife and when she drove it she said forget it she doesn't want to get a car that has a bad rear end. The sales manager said if I was to buy the car, tomorrow he and I will take the car to the Chevy dealership garage and the rear end WILL be fixed and a 12 month or 12000 mile warrenty on all repairs and parts. Then he knocked 2000 off the price. Thats right the price for this 1999 Camero Z28 v8 convertable with 38400 miles on it, is now 14,995. I said ok you got a deal. BoneDaddy, I don't know everything that has been done to the car, but in checking the bluebook, he is still taking you for somewhat of a ride sonsidering the rear end defects. I understand looking at it it feels like a great deal, but business is business and he might just be giving you the short end. Just my .02.

 

honestly...this is a sports car....every single one of them has been ran hard....if you think otherwise your in the wrong game...

There's nothing wrong with that price. Check the blue book yourself but I just came up with 20700, retail from a dealer. I paid 16500 in mar. for our vert. And yes, the wife LOVES it. Just last night cruising the christmas lights with the top down.

Be careful with dealer promises though. Get everything in writing. Personally, I would put a $250. down on it, to show I'm serious, and insist they fix it before signing on the dotted line.

One more thing. Check out what the rear gear ratio is on the driver's door. The GU-5 is a 3:23 performance axle, the GU-2 is a standard 2:73. If you have the GU-5 you automatically get an aluminum driveshaft. The "tink" sound when you put it in gear is normal. You can tell the aluminum from the steel by looking for any rust. With a flashlight, lay on the ground in front of the R rear wheel and look, if there is any rust, you have a steel shaft. The aluminum shaft is about $700. Don't let them swap in a 2:73 or a steel shaft.

I got my SS with 50,000 miles on it for 15 flat with most of the mods below and over $1000 stereo stuff not listed. I wouldn't buy a car that you know has had a problem, and if you look in auto trader you can probably find a better deal than that. there are always a lot of convertibles and automatics for sale in my area. Give it some thought, you don't want a lemon for sure.

 

I wouldn't put any weight in that 12mo/12K warranty. All of the non-electrical parts the dealer has repaired since 36K has come with a 1 year/12K warranty. Nothing out of the ordinary.

$14995 is a good deal if there aren't any hidden agendas. Seems like he really wants to sell the car. Have him throw in a 12mo/12K warranty on the entire car instead of just the repaired items.
