z28 to ss
Re: z28 to ss
you mean they claim it makes 15hp more. and as for why there wasn't a lawsuit; the cars actually make MORE hp than advertised. in truth they make about the same power as a similar year vette. IE about 350. CURRENT cars are sae rated, and they cant fudge the numbers anymore.
so you can rate em at say, 305 for my 98 z28. when it dynoed stock at slightly more than that at the tires. about 307-8 if I recall. add a circular routed hood scoop thats not sealed, and claim 320+. no worries, it dynos more than normal driveline losses say it should.
The proof is in the pudding. if SS's were really making 15-20 hp more than a stock Z, they would trap higher in the 1/4 mile. Ive seen a LOT of these cars run at the track, and a hood dont make em faster.

Re: z28 to ss
The hood intake duct which sits in an area of turbulence in the middle of the hood- a circular intake duct routing which is completely about the motor which is subject to heat soak in an air box that isn't sealed. Sounds a little more than skeptical to me.
If it was so good I think aftermarket companies would have sold hood scoops and curly-q intakes. Which in addition- if the SS system was so good why were many SS guys ditching the factory set-up in favor of the bottom breather air-box setup?

Page 3 of the 2001 camaro buyers guide states " Camaro SS 325 Hp LS1 v8 with forced air induction and 350 lb. ft. of torque.
Page 12 " z-28 and it's LS1 v8. With 310 hp under the hood, this is one serious coupe. No mention of forced are induction. I guess the hood does make 15 Hp.

The LT1 SS cars had a setup that was a little better. The lesser restrictive muffler options and available airbox lid were the only power producing components on the SS and WS6.

Re: z28 to ss
Typically the only guys who kept the stock set-up were people interested in keeping the car stock...even cutting out the bottom of the airbox and putting a different lid on the car typically netted some results better than the restrictive stock set-up.
Re: z28 to ss
I looked really hard at ordering a SS vs. Z28 back in 1998, and the only performance improvements were the cat-back exhaust and suspension, and they both were options on the SS.
I went with the Z28 since I knew I was going to modify he car, so getting a SS would of been a waste of money for me.

(mine was ordered, not bought off a lot)
Re: z28 to ss
I gave it alot of thought as well when I bought my car new, but as you can tell below I like them stock! I still think the price tag of $3950 for the SS option was to much money for what you got, but for a comparable WS6 at the time it was a few hundred $'s more and a much longer wait to get one.

BTW, I ordered my car also.
Re: z28 to ss
Well, in my line of thinking I can have one bad *** car with mods, or I can take the money I was going to spend on mods and buy more cars! I love these cars and I would rather have more of them. Insurance is dirt cheap for me so that's another reason why I don't mind having 4 of them.
Re: z28 to ss
my z28 looks just like an ss. i have 18inch c5 vette wheels and the car is lowerd. and i have the ss hood. ppl think its a ss until the see the z28 emblems. i like the name z28 better anyway. it sounds cooler
Re: z28 to ss
Z28/SS/TA/WS-6 all make roughly the same power, and they are all underrated. Therefore, there was no class action suit because thee buyer was not being harmed by getting more than they payed for.
Blackwing lid was optional, and only available in 2001/2002 if memory serves. Before that Z-28/SS/TA got the same lid. WS-6 had a sligtly taller lower air box due to available hood clearance.
The best thing you got out of the SS/WS-6 package was the bigger wheels and tires.
Hard to substantiate reports are also that 1998 and early production 1999 SS/WS-6 cars got the heavier 1LE springs. My 99 SS has substantially less spring compliance than later WS-6 cars in particular.
