Z28 governor
Re: Z28 governor
Well i have up graded the tires. I just now need some way to get the governer off. There isn't any speed shops around my area. Is there something i can buy off the net cheap to take it off. Thanks alot
Re: Z28 governor
Tell the computer that you got new tires and I'm sure it will delete the governor
you gotto be kidding me

ok guys wat i am wondering how can your tires tell u are going over 118. I have had 2 sets of tires and they both wont even let me go over 118, and the ones i got now are z-rated and didn
t change a thing. So myself personaly the tires dont have anything to do with it.QUOTE"

I have heard that before too. I tried it once in a Northstar Seville SLS. had the lesser rated tires and the 118mph governer. I couldnt get past 118, even with the let off and stab method. Kept hitting the governer. So I think thats just a myth
Re: Z28 governor
top speed is programmed into the pcm. with LT1's and LS1's, the only way around the governor is to re-program the computer. GM bases the top speed off the tires they sold on the car because that is the limiting factor of the vehicle. true, the average Joe won't kill himself taking a V rated tire past 150 every now and then, but GM looks at the bigger picture. they have to be able to justify the car's performance at full curb weight, maximum capacity, worst weather, etc. Tire manufacturer's rate their tires to withstand a certain load at a certain speed, so that the user can know full well the tires will not fail at speed. GM (no pun intended) governs it's vehicles accordingly. therefore, you tell the PCM you have the better tire, the PCM will allow higher speed, and vice versa.

the computer has no idea that you changed to a better tire unless you tell it
hopefully this helps explain it, if not I'm not sure how else to try to splain this

No granted z rated tires will keep you on the road better than h's....I wouldn't advise ANYONE who goes over 60 to get H rated tires..haha. These cars should have v at least. But your tires don't stop you from going a higher speed. Now if your speaking more of ithe tires not letting you go over 118 because of a shimmy, or just feeling edgey...I appologize. But if in fact you think getting z rated tires will let you go faster...your sadly mistaken....and this is coming from a girl....come on guys
I had a V6 Camaro with the 118 governor set by GM and I hit the cutoff point once. There was a popping noise and the car started slowing down even while my foot was flooring the accelerator. I thought my engine blew up
If anyone has one of these non-z rated F-bodies then you need to reprogram your computer to raise the speed governor currently in place (or delete it all together). Hand held units like predator as well as LS1 edit can do this for you or any performance shop for that matter. But I highly advise against deleting the speed governor until you replace the tires first
We all left the factory with computers ready to cut our fuel. Just most of us wouldn't ever know it because 162 is a speed I'll likely never have the nerve to run

The same thing is being said over and over and over again and again in this thread.
Those who dont get what is being said definitely need to get a clue. Its not that hard to comprehend!
The f-bodys that cut off at 118 originally came equiped with h rated tires. Sure, you can replace the tires with a Z rated one but it will still cut off at 118. You gotta reprogram your computer to change the cutoff to whatever speed you desire. Those that came equipped with the z rated tires can go up to 162 before the fuel cut off/governor comes on. Even the f-bodys with z rated tires can change their governor as well, by simply reprogramming the computer. Reprogramming is the only way to increase your speed, considering you have the proper tires to keep you safe at those high speeds. If you are an idiot and want to decrease your speed - GO FOR IT! All you need is a computer program, like LS1 edit or those handheld programmers.

Re: Z28 governor
u kno, i always see these top speed questions, and i ask myself, is there really a need to go past 118 in the first place? (obviously if ur at the track, ok...) but seriously.....the slightest thing at that speed and ur in trouble.... o well, be careful!
