z28 1999 camaro smog filter

Found the smog pump has a filter canister which has filter disks in it. If I take them out air comes out of outlet but when in no air.
Dirty do I clean them or replace.
Thing is I can not find any information on these.

Do you have a factory service manual? If not, free download:

I'll move this post to “LS1 Based Engine Tech”. Doesn’t appear to be related to a supercharger or turbo setup.

Goodness...I have none of those on my 98. Fred, was that added in 1999 or is it maybe unique to overseas markets?

I honestly don’t know what it is. I was going to look into the factory manual myself, but didn’t have time.

May be an export issue. It may be something added to an Australian vehicle. Who knows what is required there. Bad enough they have to move the steering to the right side.

A photo would be helpful.

Is the filter on the inlet side of the pump, or the discharge side of the pump? In the US systems the inlet side of the pump is usually fed by air that has passed through the main engine air intake filter. In diagrams by hella.au there is a similar setup shown.

https://www.hella.com/techworld/au/T...n-system-3296/

In the US, if someone wanted to modify the main engine air intake configuration, they might use a small independent air filter added to the secondary air pump inlet to prevent particulate from entering the secondary air pump. Is it possible that some part of converting the car to right hand drive necessitated the independent filter approach?

Re: z28 1999 camaro smog filter

Found fault today after about 5 hours cleaning parts and working out how this system works.
I re-read the original GM Workshop Manual I bought years ago been a very helpful.
Looks like GM has changed the system nearly each year. Read insert from manual.

Hope you can read this. The diagram showed me there was a vacuum relief valve in the output line. I found it was busy after the pipe elbow. I got it out and cleaned it and checked operation all ok but was a but dirty.

Vacuum relief valve. It's operation is to release vacuum from the hose so the pump internal valve will open allowing air to flow to check valves via a T connection.

THE FAULT WAS THE Air pump solenoid Relay.
Checked relay coil OK
Checked relay points and found high resistance when relay closed.
Replaced this relay now have full flow of air from Air Pump.
Will now have to drive car a few times to confirm all us fixed.

Good for you. The confusion Fred and I had was about the filter, not the pump. Neither of us have heard of a filter.
The secondary air injection pump had some problems and even had a recall. Maybe the filter was added to fix that by some shop. Dusty environment there?

Dusty no not where I live.
Filter looks to be original.
Found my issue was the pump stop valve relay which is for the valve inside of pump the relay had contacts high resistance. Replaced and looks like it is fixed will see.
