Is a Z06 cam really worth it???
I've heard of people gaining around 30rwhp with the LS6 cam. And swapping cams is a lot of work. Luckily I have a friend who installs cams all the time on LS1 f-bods, and he will install any cam of my choice for $150. I'm thinking about getting the MTI stealth cam.
i think theyre great cams.this is just for informational purposes only.
i trapped at 110 with this cam with an a4 and im still on stock converter, exh, and gears.its not anything great but i think its pretty good for car that sounds and runs stock.
i had my car tuned too because for whatever reason it was hitting the revlimiter on the 2-3 shift after my ls6 cam was installed.
ls1s arent bad to install cams on as far as SBCs go.the book says 10-12 hrs because it calls for pulling the intake which isnt necessary.guys who know these cars can have one in in 4-6 hrs.

To add a little more to the question, how does the LS6 cam compare in PRICE and PERFORMANCE to other cams such as Comp-cams, etc.?
I think I've read that it's reasonably priced, but are there other cams similarily priced that will net better results than the LS6 cam?
Thx

It's not a "radical" cam by any means so it's not going to produce numbers that a bigger cam would. It's a good choice though, for those looking to go for a "sleeper" effect. Stockish idle and it still makes pretty good power.
And yeah, LS1s aren't too bad for cam installs. Someone with LS1 cam install experience could have it done in an afternoon.
I've been doin a little research on this and the hotcam. To get the most out of the Z06 cam you need to rev the motor. It makes it power at the top end so 6500+ rpm's for best results. I decieded to go with the hotcam because I have a M6 and would like a little lop and more mid/low end power. Be sure to get longer pushrods with the Z06 cam though. At least thats what was recommended on the site I would hav bought the cam from. SPDC.com has Z06 cam with pushrods, springs, retainers, roller timing chain and cam install kit for $575.

I've had mine now for 2 weeks. I'm really happy with it. No Codes, no tunning issues, improved throttle response, and idles like stock. My seat of the pants dyno tells me it was well worth the $$. The cam doesn't really offer anything till about 4k RPM but you can feel it pull real hard from 4.3k on. I'll do a dyno and get some runs in with the stock tunning soon. It's an awesome sleeper cam. I shocked the hell out of an '03 M3 driver when I pulled him (from 5 cars back) from 70-130.
There are definitely bigger and better cams out there but for $189 it's a really good value. I paid $369 for cam, springs, and cam install kit from PACE.

To install this cam all the is REQUIRED is the actual cam and some stronger springs. Everything else is just a safety measure, the company trying to make some extra money, or you name it.
I got everything I needed (cam + springs) for under $400 and by the end of the job I ended up paying about $600.
Drivability...you wouldn't even know it's there. Gas milage. I'm averaging 19 mpg in the city with 4.10s in my M6 with the ls6 cam. Depends how you drive mostly, but this cam will not effect mpg at all really. Now if you get on it, of course it will suck a little more gas then the stock ls1 cam. This is a good cam for the value, but by no means does it make a lot of power. It's excellent for the sleeper effect.
Many have dynoed in the 375 rwhp range with this cam and headers. I was helped some with my cam install since I was learning. But the two who helped me out had the cam and springs swapped in 4 hours. The install is pretty easy actually.

yeah i'm not really going for the sleeper type cause i'm going with the loudmouth so it's not going to be quiet by any means...but as long as i don't have to stop every 100 miles to fill up i'll prolly be going with the Hot Cam...i still dunno, i gotta do some thinking and figuring...thanks
I want the LS6 cam because there is no tuning needed. If you are bumping compression or other tricks that will need tuning anyway you will probably want more cam. With used MAC headers, (any mid or long) cheap port and polished heads, (like getting a big discount instead of just springs and can get the right clearence for the LS6 smaller center lobe) and Cam your pushing 400HP. Your talking about $1500 plus beer for your friends helping. As for the lack of lowend power. I can't beleive its less and I have a hard time keeping tires under it now with a M6. The Hot Cam is more $$ and lope with knock sensor = tune problems. If you want more power and spend more $$$$ there are better cams. But for the cheap sleeper, LS6. Comments????
Need to sell the '93Z then this is the next project

I have the Hot cam no tuning and stock exhaust manifolds, LM and 4.11's, scares the S*** out of mustangs, it sounds shall we say rowdy, some longtubes and tuning and it would make alot more power , but I don't care about Dyno numbers, the LS-6 cam needs/ loves higher RPMS.

OK guys, another quick Q, how does the LS6 cam compare with the LS1 Hot Cam? From what "mcflyz28" just said, it sounds like maybe the Hot Cam has a lumpier idle than the LS6 cam. How about overall performance between these 2 cams? Is one a little better than the other?
I figure it's best to cover all this stuff in one thread now while it's going
. Thx
