Year of the LS-1
Year of the LS-1
Hey guys, The past month Ive been toiling on selling my 93Z for an LS1 powered beast. On two occasions I raced LS1s and the results are part of my confusion. Bone stock 6m 2001SS put about 2 car lengths in a street 1/4. Very impressive! Then a 98 TA,a4 ran nearly even several times. The owner of the 98 is a friend and through out our mods he has never beat me. Even both running nitrous on and off the track. The question is; is the 2001ss that much faster than a 98 ta? Is there major differences in the Ls1's performance wise depending on the year? There are some posts on here where the Ls1 runs 14.s and some running low 13.s. I would hate to sell my paid off $25 dollar a month for insurance( liability only, not a daily driver) 93Z and be disappointed. If I keep the 93 Ill do heads. Thanks
Well the '01 has LS6 intake and a smaller cam and injectors and the SS has better exahust and induction in stock form. If you racing from a roll that would explain the SS m6 pulling you, and your stall and gears will help you from a roll and a dig against the TA a4. You said the TA is modded right?? What mods?? I would say a stock '98 a4 with 2.73's should run in the 13.6 to 13.8 range @103 to 105 ish. Do you have any 1/4mi times??
For the most part, all of the LS1 F-Bodies are really close to each other in performance. With equal drivers, one car will not totally blow another one off the road.
In '01, the LS1 got the LS6 intake and some LS1s left the factory with the LS6 block, which is probably present in the cars that run freakish 1/4-mile times stock and/or dyno higher than other cars. Your friend's SS might have this block, he might know how to drive better than the '98 Trans Am owner, etc. There are many variables present when trying to figure out why two similar cars aren't equally fast.

The others have already said it, in the 01 model year the LS6 intake manifold was used. This resulted in a 5hp increase (most will say this is at the wheels, and I believe it's true.)
From what I know the LS6 block has NO performance advantages except that it is a tad bit stronger. But I'm not certain. Should make interesting research material.
