the 02 probably...came with the most hp

the 01/02 are nice due to having the LS6 intake and no egr.

maybe see if you can track down one with the LS6 block too.

i know 01-02 have the ls6 intake, but was their any truth to them having a "smaller" cam then 98-00 to equalize the ls1 intake?

to find one with an ls6 block, your chances are better with an 02', as they put more out that year.

They have the LQ4 truck cam, and yes its a smaller grind. They still run very hard with it and dyno higher than previous years. IMO this isn't the cam's doing. They also have larger injectors and the tuning was tweaked a bit. 00 up also have better exhaust manifolds. Important for you since CA frowns on headers. Environazi bastages.... 00 is kind of a bastard year. It had the egr crap of the privious years w/AIR, but w/out the LS6 parts of the 01-02

Personally, I'd go with wich ever one was in the best shape for the best deal. For the price diff between a 98 and 02, mod the 98 and outrun the 02. It all depends on what you want to do. Just a bolt on only car, I'd probably go 01-02. If you're going to mod it further, it doesn't matter.

In my opinion it's not so much what year makes the most power but rather if it has the 3.23 gears or not. I'd rather have a '98-'00 with 3.23's then a '01-'02 with 2.73's.

Buying a car based on the gears,WTF? The gears can swap out no problem, and should be, IMO. I went from the 3.23's to 3.73's and WOW, big diff. Just get one that you like, forget the year, the BUG will take over and the year wont matter.

Get any A4 SS or WS6 and they'll have 3.23. They were options on the base models and can be had in any year.

check out the years of cars and gears in the sigs in this thread:
http://ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=281583

One guy was runnin 11.94 w/2.73's.

Here is a link to the year specs:

Re: Which year is the best for an LS1

98's have crappy headlights
98's have a different gas tank
98's have a working temperature guage

99's have the "best" cam ... if you can really say its the "best"

i believe it was 2001 when they switched over to much much much better exhaust manifolds, they're almost like shorties but not quite.

I heard the 00's had the more agressive cam, but here are the specs....
Cam specs:
http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showpo...87&postcount=9

98-00 are the SAME for f-bodies. it was the 00 Vette (not f-body) that had the more agressive f-bodyish cam (lobe sep is different). Not that it mattered.

Just go here for all the differences :

LS1 or LS6 block?
http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showpo...86&postcount=8

Read the bottom lines, "Its generally accepted from most engine builders that if your going for an extreme setup that the LS1 block offers more structural strength over the LS6 block.

THE LS6 BLOCK DOES NOT INCREASE HP, REPEAT AFTER ME "IF I HAVE AN LS6 BLOCK IT DOES NOT INCREASE POWER". LEARN IT, SAY IT, REPEAT IT."

Yes, I am well aware of that. People were discussing which year to purchase for the most HP and I added my two cents that I'd be more concerened about gears then HP if you want to purchase an A4 car with the most acceleration stock for stock.
