Will an SS 'smoke' a Z28?
They all dyno +-10 rwhp, so the dud theory is out. It is a drivers race, plain and simple. If you think the SS hood draws in cold air, go read the article at http://www.installuniversity.com or A-tap an SS and watch the IAT reading.

Is there such a thing as a "factory freak"? I have a z28 and raced same year SS's and usually beat them. There's this one guy in town who has a stock 01 SS and he BLOWS me away. I don't know why. He says cause it's an SS but my friends say his is just a factory freak. Do those exist?

With LS1's there are factory freaks. There seems to be some huge differences motor to motor. None are really duds, but some do seem to out perform others.
I got lucky with mine. I have run two SS Camaro's of the same year with basically the same mods (they both have corsa exhaust, I hae a dynomouth)There friends of mine so we run them quite often. For whatever reason I get them every time. We are all M6's and all stock to the bone other than exhaust.
a TA or Z28 will keep up and in some cases beat WS6's and SS's. Aerodynamically the hoods hurt more than help in both cases. The larger wheels equal more weight, more moving inertia, a slight aerodynamic dissadvantage and a slightly taller rear end gear ratio.
F1's are unfortunately no easier to launch with, especially due to the harder/smaller sidewall.
The exhaust is basically there only edge hp wise, but it does often get negated from the start due to the differences in engines from one car to another.
This is in no way a knock on SS's and WS6's I love the looks of both and the collectability factor.
I chose not to go with a WS6 because I just do not like the look of the news rims and heard to many stories of guys with them after 99 finding stock TA suspension components under there cars. I love the hood, but it just wasn't worth the 3500 extra to me at that time.

I really don't have anything to add to this thread except to say that everyone that assumes that the 17" F1 wheel and tire combo is heavier than the 16" GSC stock wheel and tire combo should have solid facts before they make such statements
We have a 98 SS and a 00 Formula and I weighed a wheel/tire off of each car on the same day on the same scale. 42 pounds each.
No difference.
A lot of aftermarket 17" wheels and maybe other 17" tires are heavier but NOT the stock SS wheel tire combo. So that aspect will have nothing to do with the race between a Z and an SS.

The SS hood is not as light as you'd think. No 'ram air' effect, but it sure looks good, so I bought one for my Zed.
As for salesmen (dealerships or aftermarket stuff):
Q: How can you tell if a salesman is lying?
A: His lips are moving.
The average salesman will tell you what he thinks you want to hear to make the sale. In this case, he was just trying to justify the upcharge for the SS package.

Not 'this' Z28...
This has to be the most asked question by someone who disent know about Fbodies.. Stock Vs. Stock, thay are in the same ball park but the SS has a slight advantage becaus it has the ram air, wider tires and the Z28 dosent... Ive seen stock Z28s dyno higher then SSs and vice versa. Each car is different and when you buy one its the luck of the draw.... If i ever buy another 4thgen, id get the SS or WS6 package just becaus of the apperance of the spoiler and ram air hood...

I don’t think anyone said Gear's. 3.23 vs. 2.73 would change things a little.
I think most of the z28's come with higher gearing. Luckily I got a z28 with 3.23’s I really think that makes a big change in the way the car feels

Well I have to ad my 2 cents. No on ementioned the driveshaft, the 1LE version on the SS (aluminum) shaves about 50lbs (from what I am told), which is another advantage for the SS. The hood helps in getting cold air to the motor but unfortunately it is not pressurized. You can see my mods (limited) and times in the sig. I am extremely happy with my SS, very fast.
As far as factory freaks , don't believe in them unless your talking about maybe one car having 10hp over another, which is not a FF in my book. The engines are the same, there are tolerances that can cause one motor to be a little stronger than another but hardly noticeable. I'd say FFs are probably due more to someone telling you its stock and its not.
Also, F1s are awesome tires, they hook up incredibly well, but my new Nittos crush them, and I haven't lost to another F-body yet.

An aluminum driveshaft is only 6-8 pounds lighter than steel, and has not been part of the "1LE option" since 1992. All LS1 M6 F-bodies have an aluminum driveshaft.

i should have known the subject was not about a4's (someone would have already said gears)
