Post Will an SS 'smoke' a Z28?

6-speed vs 6-speed.

The dudes at the dealerships claim they will.

I am pretty confident they will be IDENTICAL and the SAME, until you go fast enough (90+) that the 'not so ram air' might help a tad.

Opinions?

Am I right, or the dealership? What other 'performance' differences are there?

Oh, I am talking primarily about say a 2002 vs a 2002, or a 2001 vs a 2001, etc... The only variable would be the badge that says Z28 and SS.

There exhaust flows a little better they have slightly wider tires for launch, the ss should be just a hair faster.

as brad said the exaust gives them a slight advantage, and that advantage gets bigger if they get the optional dual dual exaust.

the tires are wider, but they also have smaller sidewalls and heavier rims, so theres really no advantage. the F1s on the SS's may be better hookin tires than the RS-A's or GS-Cs though

bottom line, they are so close to each other stock that it will be up to the driver, and variances in the car (if the z is a ringer and the SS is a dud and equal drivers are used the Z will win)

Will either car get "smoked" with average drivers? no. it will be close. but the SS should take the Z

Unless you are talking about a road race, the SS would ahve a clear advantage there witht he better suspension

SS is an appearance package until you purchase options. Most of the options are for handling. The one performance option it has that would give it a little boost is the Dual/Dual exhaust... the standard SS exhaust is the same performance wise as the Z's, just prettier. The hood is worthless for ram air. Too many obsticals (sp?) and contortions, and it is not sealed to the air box. The wheels and tires are heavier, which hurts acceleration.
Soooooooo.... like another presented as their opinion, mine is that they are equal and any 'smoking' would only be due to a poor driver losing, or a good driver winning.

Well it's funny you should bring that up because I just got home from the drags at Mokan in my 00' SS with the dual/dual. I was very disapointed to be running 13.8's at 103 as compared to my 00' Z with only a muffler that ran 13.5's at 105. I think it's all about getting a dud or not.

Definately not. The SS package is mainly for appearance. Now, you can order a lid, exhaust, and other options from SLP, driving the price through the roof. These options can add a small amount of horsepower. But as far as an SS smokin' a "Z", highly unlikely, unless the "Z" driver is inexperienced.

the SSes are the same HP (no SLP options) and same susspension.....are usually heavier and therefore, should be a tad slower! Course, in the real world, they are ABOUT equal! The SS does have an advantage in the looks dept, though, but I still think the Z looks pretty damned mean!

To those that think the SS and Z28 have the same suspension ... you are dead wrong. The SS uses different rate springs and shocks. This is due to the different wheels used. Also the front sway bar is 32MM, as opposed to the Z28s 30MM. The base SS can out corner a similar Z28, but in the 1/4 mile it's up to the driver. The extra 10HP (as advertised) comes from a better flowing exhaust. SSs are not just appearance packages.

Cool

SLP has a performance suspension package for sale, which they advertise as the same optional package available on an SS or Firehawk - specifically, they call it a "Level 1" suspension kit. So, I guess an SS hooks up better, but someone else said the wheels are heavier, so it's a trade-off?

Anyway, I'd rather have my Z28 - that should generate some more responses!

Don't forget that the SS hood is all fiberglass, so the SS is not heavier I think but it all depends on your options! If you have a Vert, or t-tops that adds weight.

A stock SS vs. a Stock Z28 is about dead even. It always comes down to the drivers and who gets a better launch.

I just got the SS because I liked the looks of the hood and wing. I knew it would not be faster than a Z28, but none of my F-bodies have ever been stock.

I dont wanna burst any of you SS owners bubble here. My buddies has a 02 SS 6-speed with true dual and lid. I had the lid and exhaust at the time. Had him from a start by back fender to front by 60. Also had him beat from a 40 mph roll. Dont wanna cause trouble, how bout some pride for us Z owners.

Wink

Have a 01 SS and a 02 z-28 for the wife.. There is no difference in the power..I thrash both cars and one doesn't stand out from the other...Either way, a SS or Z, you won't be displeased......My 2 cents

Car dealers are the people that were to stupid to become lawyers. I had a dealer tell me he could get me a new Z28 for the price of a used one. The dealer was trying to get you to buy the more expensive car, he was trying to get what is called commission.
