Why the switch to coil mounting brackets in 2000?
Why the switch to coil mounting brackets in 2000?
I tried a search but didn't come up with an answer. It's my understanding that the '99 (?) and earlier LS1 engines had the coils mounted directly to the valve covers, while '00+ LS1 engines use coil mounting brackets which are then bolted to the valve covers. Does anyone know why this change was made?
The reason I ask is because I want to mount my LS1 coils on the sheet metal valve covers of my LT1 and need to know whether there's a good reason to buy the newer GM brackets, or if I can just mount the coils however I want by welding mounting posts to the top of the covers like the earlier LS1 covers had.
Thanks!

The thought switch was made in 99. Only 98 f-bodys have direct mounted coils as far as I know.
It was done to keep the coils cooler, to ground them better, and it's cheaper. Because the coils now come in as an assembly from a vendor.
