Why is my gas mileage so sh!tty?
I am not positive on the LS1's, but on the LT1's it is under the drivers side of the car not too far from the left rear tire. if i remember correctly, it is to the front right of the drivers side rear tire. the filters themselves are not too expensive. i know you can pick one up for less than $20 depending on what brand you get. just look at the new filter and you will see how it connects. be careful when you change it. i would change the filter first thing in the mourning or after the car sat for 5 hours so there is no pressure in the line. make sure you dont turn the key to the "on" position either as this will activate the fuel pump. you will still loose some fuel out of the line when you take it off so watch your eyes. it is best to wear some goggles and have a little bucket on the side of you to drain the fuel in. you will probally just need a few open end wrenches to get the job done. its not that difficult.
I'll just say this...Hey,Ilove my car but the gas guage sucks big time.I use the tripometer to track when I need gas in addition to the guage and a new sending unit plus labor for dropping the tank doesn't make it worth it to me.The lousy gas gauge does't keep my car from eating Mustangs and embarrassing ricers!
i wouldnt put too muhc faith in the stock gas gauge.....mine fluctuates a lot more than it should...in fact sometimes when i take my car out of gear itll drop or climb up to 1/4 of a tank, then i stick it back in gear and it goes back.....GM engineering at its finest!
Well i dont think that the float in the tank could be stuck because i dont do enough driveing to warrant it to lose that much gas. Like we are talking 24 miles each day. I should use about 1/8 of a tank at most. But like i said earlier it will drop 1/4's each time i go some where. So i doubt it is the float. I am almost there i have 1/4 of a tank left. I have about 200 miles on that tank.
Not sure if anyone posted this, didnt bother reading all the posts:
Our gas tanks are shaped like a V. so when your tank reads halfway (half way down the V) there is CONSIDERABLY less then half a tank. dont know how else to explain it but hope it helps.
But yeah to test you gas mileage : reset your trip, fill your tank, drive around until you need to fill up, fill it up the same way as before, take the amount of gallons you just added, divide it into the amount of miles you traveled and there you have your REAL gas mileage. (as previously stated.

i would go ahead and get the skip shift eliminator too. They don't cost that much, and are really easy (once you figure which silenoid to plug into). Look on eBay, and if you don't find one for $15 or less, look on the other popular LS1 aftermarket sites. If you do get one, and let me know, and I'll look under my car and take a pic so you know which silenoid to plug into. Hope you find the problem. These get great gas milage usually.
ah, so that explains it.

Her house is on level ground(dont even need to use the e-brake) My drive way is a little hill but nothing bad and yes i know that the gas guage will fluctuate when not on level ground because it causes all the gas to flow to either the back or the front. But what i was saying is that, when i filled up I traveled 5 miles back to my house and 1/8-1/4 was gone! I mean i could maybe see that if i drove home all the way in 1 or something but i didnt go above 3k on any of my shifts.

The point is for you to find out what the real gas mileage is then we'll go from there and try to help you if you have a problem. Gas guage readings don't tell us anything.
Exactly.
ok, i Got 246.2 mi on the first tank of gas that i put in bare in mind that i filled it until it over flowed...lol now i only had like 20 bucks today and my car was on the E. I went to the same gas station and the same pump. I put in 11.498 gal, the gas guage only went until about 3/4 or so. there was about 1/8 of space left before the needle was on F. It says here that i am getting 21.41 MPG. But i think that is a little off seeing how i didnt have enough $$ to fill it until it overflowed this time. But that being said seening how i only travel 24 miles round trip to work and back i shouldnt be useing 1/4 of a tank of gas! or should i in this car? I thought they were supposed to get good mpg? My old Monte SS with a 600cfm carb modded with bigger pushrods and springs and a cammed 355 made that trip and only used 1/8th of a tank and it had an A4 with a shift kit.

And my guage reads past full, and doesn't act like I'm using gas unitl I travel about 100-150 miles. From then on, it drops quicker as it gets towards E. Yours sounds like its dropping too fast, so maybe there is something wrong with your gauge. Do you have stock guage faces, or has anyone changed them. I just changed mine, and so I had to recalibrate all of them. It kinda sounds like urs aren't callibrated. Did you say that your guage reads past full when u filled it up? If it does then its not ur guage callibration. Anyways, sounds like there's nothing wrong with your car, the gas guage just isn't as accurate as you would like it to be. Thats prob cause our tank is shaped like a V like someone esle already said. Hope I'm helping

yes, inorder for you to get an accurate reading you must put the fill to the same amount each time. Don't make it overflow, just let the pump fill until it stops. 246.2 mi /21.41mpg sounds good to me! Even if its a little off, the fact that u filled completely up, and was able to drive 246 miles is about the same that I am able to travel, unless I'm only on the highway. So there is nothing wrong with your car. As for your guage. Try not driving on 1/4 tank (I think thats what you're doing, let me know if ur not). I fill until it stops everytime unless I don't have enough money.

Well i filled it until it stopped, but as i said last time i did it until it overflowed...lol cause i was trying to cram as much gas in as i could for a road trip. But yes yesterday i filled it until the pump did the automatic shut off thing so u dont overflow. I had 20 bucks and it filled the tank, then when i started teh car it said that i had 1/8th left of room before the car would be full, and i am just like well, if the pump did the autoshut off thing then why is the car saying that it isnt completely full? So i guess the car is out of calaber by 1/8 or so? But the previous owner put the white face guages in. The Spedo, tach and every thing else seem to be fine.
to me it sounds like the guage is messed up, but if it is turns out to be something else, bad o2 sensors will dramitacly effect gas mileage I usually get 19-20 then over time it got worse and worse changes the o2's and it got me back to 20. I changed over to NGK tr6 plugs a while back and made a few runs on N2O and my mileage drop again so i have another problem, I don't really want to pull all the pulgs to check them because its a pain in the *** but I guess I will have to unless someone has another suggestion on my problem.

I believe we just solved your problem! You said you had white faced guages. To do this you have to pull the needles off and put the guage on there, then put the needles back on. I def think he didn't but the needle back on right. When I did it, I cared alot about MPH and RPM, the others, as long as they were in the same general area I was happy. I haven't emptied my tank since putting the guages in, so I don't know if i got exactly right. What leads me to belive this is the problem ur having is, that your gas milage is fine, 18-16 mpg short trip driving, and the fact that u said when its ful, it shows 1/8 way from being full. To fix this, you need to take the bolts out where your guages are, then when you get the face off, take out more bolts, then pull the entire guage cluster out. Push in the tabs to take the clear part off of the cluster, then use a screw driver with a flat tip, and gently pry off the needle. I would recommend doing this after u filled up on gas. Put the cluster back in the car without the clear part on, and push it in until the needles move. Then turn the ignition key to the on position and place the gas needle back on so where it points to F or a little past F. (Basically wherever you want) Then turn the car off, and put the clear part back on and bolt everything back in. Use up a tank of gas again, and then let us know what happened. Good Luck
