Why is my gas mileage so sh!tty?

Ok i dont get it? I have to travel 24 miles round trip to my work and back. Ok, now my old 87 Monte SS with a carbed 355 gets teh same gas mileage that i do know! LOL I use about an 1/4th of a tank each round trip now. Today the car seemed to use like an 1/8th tank of gas each time i started it. I drove 9 miles to my friends house i had 1/4 tank left in the car. Shut it off went inside then we decided to go to the mall. Turned the car back on and the gas guage said that i was down to an 1/8th. Oh and the mall is like 5 miles from his house. Then when we went to the mall. I shut the car off and went inside, then when we came back i started the car and this time it said that teh car was on E! Then i drove it to the gas station and had them fill it halfway. I dont get it. Then somedays when i make a trip to my work and back i will use like 1/16 of gas. I dont get it. I dont drive like a maniac. I shift 1st at 3k other wise i get the damn skip shift. And i shift each gear at about 2200 rpms. I dont beat on the car. I dont get it. Can someone explain what is going on? I was told that 4th gens can get between 18-20mpg city driveing and 27 HW. I havent seen either! And the plugs are fairly new and all the filters are new and i charged the k&N and its got mobile 1 inside her. I just find this weird anybody got a clue?

How about running a controlled test instead of a "fuel guage mileage" check? No flame intended.

Fill the tank. Do it yourself. Top it off or use 3 automatic shutoffs of the pump. Now note your odometer reading, and drive the car like you always do for most of the tank of gas.

Go back to the same pump, and top it off exactly the same way. Note the miles you've gone, and divide miles by gallons. This is your actual average mpg. I bet you'll be surprised with the result.

Short in-town trips with a cold engine are the worst for mileage.
If you take a 200+ mile highway trip, fill up at the start and at the end and recheck.

yeah the guages are not the most accurate.

seems like it takes 10 gallons to fill to just shy of full...then another 5 gallons to top the tank off...least that is howmy car acts..

milage around town for me has been pretty good. first tank after i bought hte car...was getting on it more than nomral to get use to it...just under 23mpg, second tank just over 22mpg...

and i only live 1.3 miles from work...so i drive alot of short trips

Lightbulb I'm with you, bro !

Why is my gas mileage so sh!tty?

I drive about ~45 miles round trip to & from work.

This is a mix of city streets & highway - I'd guess 10 - 12 miles highway, 10 - 13 miles city of that.

Here lately, it's been pigging gas - I can't seem to do better than around 16 MPG.

I did a mainly highway run the other week - lot's of traffic, though
, and got in the 18 range.

I have to guess it's a combo of hot, muggy weather causing more effort on the go pedal to get the same performance coupled w/ non-stop A/C use.

I have to say that when it comes to MPG's, I am definitely jealous of the M6 guys.

I have an A4 w/ a 2800 stall , few free mods, and a HPP3 .
I don't flog on it every time I hit the gas, but I don't exactly baby it, either.

Here's a possible solution:

Heads & cam - the increased power will make it require less effort to get to the speed I need, thereby saving gas !!

Wonder if I can get the old lady to buy into that theory ?

Ahhh, it did it again. I went exactly 3 miles to my gfs house and then when i started my car to leave it dropped an 1/8th! I dont get it. I had a 1/4 tank when i went over her house and now i have 1/8th! I dont get it. I have an M6 and i know i should be getting more then like 10 miles to the gallon. I have a bad airpump but i dont think that it is going to cause me to burn a crap load of gas. Anythoughts?

I was going to start a similar thread about the matter. It really just seems to be an inaccurate fuel gauge because mine will do the same thing; drop dramatically when starting up after previously only driving a short distance. Sometimes the gas gauge will read higher than what it was before. The gauge likes to play mind games with your head, I was thinking my gas mileage was much worse than it really was. Like mentioned before, just top off and reset your trip odometer and run it dry, then see how many gallons are needed to fill back up. I've been averaging somewhere around 17-19mpg, mostly city driving with occasional punching the accelerator.

Again.............DON'T TRUST THE GAS GAUGE!!! Once it gets below 1/2 tank, I find that it will drop faster and faster............especially from 1/4 and down.

RESET the TRIP METER when you fill up. This is the most accurate means of measuring.

The best mileage I've gotten so far in my car was about 26-27 mpg on a long highway drive last summer. The worst mileage I've gotten though is probably around 12-14 mpg when I've been extra "throttle happy"!! I seem to average right around ~20 mpg though.

Yeah that is basicly what happens. I mean it sucks cause now i have no idea when i should refuel or not. I Filled my tank to the max today, until it overflowed.....lol and i set the odometer. Rigjt now i got 56 miles out of about 1/4 of a tank. Actually it is prob a bit more seeing how the guage was like all the way to the right..lol But is there anyway to correct this? I am going to be bringing my car to the dealer soon, cause i need that airpump replaced and i need to have my tail lights fixed.

The fuel gage sender is a float that moves up and down in the tank. It can stick and give you a false gage reading until it breaks loose. In a C5 Vette, there are two tanks, and if one sender sticks, it really gets crazy. Hitting a bump often loosens up the float again.

Removing, inspecting and repairing or replacing the sender would probably solve the problem, but unless it's under warranty, it might be expensive. Ask the cost first.

Capn Pete's advice was good. If you don't check your tank mileage as suggested above, an inaccurate gage will drive you nuts. Check it once and fill up on miles driven.

Our gauges just flat out suck... i get 50 miles before it moves off Full then i restart the car and all of a sudden i am 1/4 down... i will NEVER trust my gas gauge.

If you overfill with gas(like forcing too much gas after the automatic shutoff) the gauge can get stuck in the full.. when it finally gets unstuck, its immediately plummets to mroe or less the correct position..

Its also a good idea to not run the gas tank too low all the time.. the fuel pump inside the tank is cooled by the gasoline in the tank.. so when your running near empty, you'll start uncovering it.... which can cause it to overheat and die in extreme cases.. (this applies to alot of other cars)

LT-14me - As others have said you can't rely on the gas guage to say there's a prob. Try topping it off and drive till it gets to E before u fill up. Then see what gas milage you get. If its still horrible, then try getting a skip shift disabler. You will still get the light, but it won't lock out 2nd. If you don't want to do that, just shift into neutral, then shift to second. (it might take some playing around but it will allow you to do it this way without going to 3k rpms) Try shifting as low as you can like 1500-2000 rpms. Do this for a full tank too. If your gas milage is still horible, then I would say there is a problem. M6s get great gas milage if you let them. I believe its the shift point that is a big factor. I fill up every week, and I do about half city, half highway. I get 250ish miles to every tank, which equals 18-20mpg. But this is because I shift between 1500-2000 rpms, and cruise in 3rd (20mph - 25mph) 4th (>25mph) or 5th (40mph-50mph), and use 6th gear once I pass 50mph. Driving this way will not give you a whole lot of performance, but it saves gas pretty well. Hope this helps

you could try changing the fuel filter if your gas mileage is really poor. it may just be dirty and getting clogged.

Dont go by the gauge, dude, your car isnt magicaly loosing gas, the gauge changes depending on what angle it is parked, if you park at home with the nose up it is going to read different then if you park at work with the nose down.

Gas up, reset your odometor, drive till it hits Empty, fill it up,THEN:

Divide the total miles by the amount of gas put in and you will get you mpg.

Yep that is exactly how i drive it. I use 5th gear religiously. I was looking into a skip shift disabler but it says not for use on polution controlled vehicles. And my car is at about 1/2 a tank. so we will see....
But just incase how do i change a fuel filter for this car?...lol i mean i am sorry but this is the first FI car i have ever owned. All my other cars have been carbed with the exception of a jeep cherokee that i owned for less then a year.
