Why exactly do A4's need tuning w/ a cam and M6's don't?

With mild/medium cams, why do A4's need the idle increased but an M6 doesn't? I simply can't think of why. Someone please enlighten me. It sucks that Imma hafta blow even more $$ to get someone to increase my idle when I get my TR224 cam

I think it is because with an M6 you can keep the car from stalling, while with an A4 you really can't. You can probably drill your throttle body out a tad to raise your idle and "get by" without tuning, but it will probably be in your best interest to get it tuned...

Get the LS-1 edit, it will let you do a whole lot more than just raise your idle speed, and you can do it in the comfort of your own home, no need to send the PCM out and hope they get it right on the other end, no UPS charges ... yadda yadda ..

Hope this helps

because the cam will lope and change vacuum so when you put it in gear the idle will drop to low or surge to high so either you'll have to be on the brake or the car will just die. as in a m6 it will just lope.

well you can get a cam that doesnt "need" the tuning like a hot cam. Inreality you should buy edit with any cam because its the specific tuning that will net you that perfected hp.
Not to mention that you have total control of the a4 tranny with edit. THe shifts/preassures/ TM all can then be tweaked. The auto tranny is a very powerful componenet that you should get edit for cam or not!

So... When you send your PCM to get reprogrammed the only thing they really need to do is raise your idle pt?

No there's a lot more to it ... even if you have an M6, eventually you will want tuning. Yeah it'll run, but you will be leaving a significant portion of your gains on the table.

Besides idle, you have misfire codes that need to be deleted, raise the rev limiter - your power band is likely to be beyond 6200, the stock rev limiter - fuel tables, timing tables and in an A4 your shift points, torque managment and pressure. Last you if you have headers you can delete the rear O2 sensors, eliminating the need for sims.

The difference between an untuned PCM and a well tuned PCM could be worth as much as a half second at the track.

Good Luck

With a manual, the motor is free to idle where it needs to so it will remain running without moving or stalling. With an Auto while in gear, if it idles too high, it will cause the car to surge forward so it takes a little more to balance a cam at a low idle so the car won't stall, and not too high so that it tries to roll forward.

someone has obviously never had a ls1 with a automatic and a hotcam

:-)

Not trying to flame but he will be very disappointed if he buys a hotcam.. hotcam has a horrible idle especially for its size. It took lots of TB drilling and pcm programming to get mine to idle properly..

yes i was able to eek buy without programming for a while, but driveability is not good at all..

actually if you get several people together 3-4 you can get edit cheaply because the more guys buy in on a bundle of licenses the lower the price. after the cam you'll wannt perfect the tuning anyway right? Else you went through the pain of installing a cam and only reaping partial benefits. You should be GLAD you can get such a robust tuning tool for the home user/tuner. Or go and have it dyno tuned for several hundred.
