Why does my car run like an LT1 ?
At M7 today, best I could muster is 14.1 until I swapped in the lid and K&N, then I got a 13.95 and a 13.97
Short times are 2.00 with no tire spin on slightly heated Cooper Cobras (steet tire)
No mods whatsoever besides the lid and filter. 99 Convertible Z28 A4. 53k miles
Is it the weight of the drop top? Is it the Gu2 axle?
This bums me out. My stock 94 Camaro ran 14.12!!

I've been to the track twice now, once before the lid (bone-stock) and once since the new lid, and the best time I've run so far is 14.008 @ 102.99. Now, I know that the track prep sucked the first time I went, and the second time I went, it was hot as hell, and very humid, so I know under better conditions, I probably would have got a little better time and speed.
I imagine that the convertible would be a little extra weight to move down the track, and certainly the 2.73's don't help either --- that's why I want to swap in a set of 3.73's next year (and the next time I go, I want to drop a little tire pressure and see if I can get better traction --- although I was cutting 2.1 60' times).
Don't worry though, you're not the only one with an LT1 powered, "LS1 powered" Camaro!!!!

Well, the hunidity was very low, and the temps were right around 60 degrees F.
My trap speed topped out at just a hair over 101 mph
I know I could do some free mods, ands some weight saving and stuff like that and get a little deeper in the 13s, but whats this I keep hearing about magazines seeing low 13s, and even high 12s stock? Are those M6 cars?
I know the car was just hitting 3rd at the lights (gawd those 2.73 gears suck!)
Now I am just so tempted to play with the car a bit and get the times down. But I have to stay focused on the big block first! (It's tough having all these F bods..you want to mod them all)

Yeah, I noticed too after a few runs that the 2-3 shift happens just before crossing the finish line, so what I tried on one of my runs was to hold the car in 1st for another ~200RPM, and then hold the shifter in 2nd 'til the end of the track --- my E.T. and MPH were just a little slower than the previous run I did leaving it in Drive, but what sucked is right at the finish line, the car was hitting the rev-limiter like crazy!!!!
........................................hence, 3.73's next year baby!!!

Doesn't the convertible have poorer aerodynamics than a coupe?
If so, this could have played a role, as well as the heavier weight and the GU2 axle.
Also, have you replaced the spark plugs at all? I've heard that the platinum on the stock plugs wears off after a while.

Yeah, that's what annoys me... my 94 Camaro ran 14.1 stock when I had only had the car 12 days and had never been on a drag strip before in my life. I had it doen to 12.8 with just the mods in the sig!! It would take all those mos on my LS1, and I am not sure it would be that fast yet...
Not to mention the price of LS1 parts! Maybe I should just stick to my big block car!

You just happen to have the slowest stock combo for a LS1 car (convt, A4, 2.73s). I don't think your times really that off, maybe a tad below avg for your car. Those 2.73s can be killer, especially with the extra weight.
Did you leave it in drive? The computer is much better at shifting than we are and your car will be much faster if you let it do the work. Besides, manually shifting the 4L60 is what will get you an early rebuild.
what troubles me about this board sometimes is the fact the some people think that just because they have an ls1 they think that it should smoke a lt1. now stock to stock it should beat it but not by much, you also have to take things into account like the fact that a convertable had garbage aerodynamics and also weighs more. that and the fact you have a 99 if you had a 01 or 02 you would be faster still due to the fast of the ls6 intake and a different cam. i myself have a ls1 as you can see in my sig and in my screen name, but i am not ignorant to the lt1 power my buddy has a 93 that will leave me in the dust granted it isnt stock and it is a manual and mine is an auto. you have to look at things like the torque curve lt1 has a broader curve and the ls1 is more of a top end curve. i am not trying to rag on anyone with this statement i am just saying that the lt1 is not something to be taken lightly all it takes is the right bolt ons and they are as fast as a 99-00 ls1 mainly a cat-back and cai that is all my buddy had and he was right next to me all the way down the strip. but take it as a way to motivate you to put some parts into that thing and make it fly.
how can you say the lt1's are close to an LS1, they run 13.80's, LS1's run LOW 13's, for example i went 13.1 @109.7 my first time ever to a track with my WS6. not to mention it put more power down at the wheels than a lt1 makes at the flywheel. its not bashing the lt1, it is just the facts. the ls1 is benefitting from modern technology and years of research. but the a4 convert will be slower than a hardtop m6, no doubt about it.
