Most people put it right before the rear axle. Its easy to access from there as well.

You could put one right after each header if you wanted.

Like said most do it right before the axle.

Mine will be placed right after the y-pipe, like you described.

newbie question, what exactly is a cutout, is it legal, is it just a hole in the pipe?

Cutout is usually a Y-shaped pipe assembly, which is welded onto your I-pipe. Usually behind the passenger seat, just before the rear axle.

When it is capped, the exhaust gases flow through the headers/manifolds, cats, muffler, or what ever you have and come out from the back of the car. When uncapped, the exhaust gases flow through the opening and therefore bypassing the muffler, hence giving you more hp.

Like mentioned before, some people put them even before the cats, right after headers/manifolds.

Pretty good bang for the buck when a cutout costs ~35 bucks and installation another 20-30 bucks.

Legal? If it is legal to drive basically without muffler, then I guess it is, otherwise probably not.

I will also get an elecric opener for it, so I don't have to crawl back under the car every time I want it capped/uncapped. QTEC and McCord MPP2 are the most common brands used.

So a search and you'll find plenty of more info, if needed.
