Wheel hop?

Hey, as thought earlier, the banging from underneath my car might have been the slp Y pipe, but i can find no traces of inpact. I think i may have wheel hop, but only in my passanger side wheel? The happens just when the wheels break loose (on dry, wet, or sand). Why would this happen after the exhaust, and not before? Could i have a problem in the suspension?

Re: Wheel hop?

Remember, the exhaust is not solid -- it's mounted on rubber hangers that allow it to move. That is most likely what you're hearing. Check the clearance above that flimsy black piece of metal they use as a poor excuse for a tunnel brace. That is where I had contact between the car and my exhaust. If you really are having wheel-hop issues and that's what you're hearing, then there are quite a few variables that could be causing it and it's just coincedence they occured after the exhaust swap. I'd be willing to bet the road surface is the key cause of most wheel-hop issues -- as far as how much/when/how long your tires are getting traction -- followed by wheel & suspension combinations. However, I've never experieced wheel-hop on sandy or dirt roads and quite rarely on wet ones. That's why I'm willing to bet it's your exhaust. So my opinion is check it again.

Re: Wheel hop?

hmmm...

I had a 2000 SS and it had a slight wheel hop when I shifted hard into second gear but it was very obvious... I mean, the rear of the car shaked and bounced a little on one side. There was no way it could have been mistaken for something banging around.

My Cobra wheel hops like a crazy jack rabbit on crack and the whole azzz end comes off the freaking ground! LOL

Ummm.. My WS6 hasen't wheel hoped at all, but like I said, it seems impossible to confuse wheel hop with something banging around.

Might want to check your suspension out and double check your exhaust and anything else under the car that might have come loose during the install...

Re: Wheel hop?

I would have to say that its the exhaust as well... get under the car and check the entire setup from start to end to look for any areas that're loose. Wheel hop would be pretty obvious... the rear end will be bouncing up and down off the road and vibrate the hell out of the car

Re: Wheel hop?

Is it possible that the I-pipe is banging around in the tunnel and hitting the drive shaft? cause the entire car seems to be bouncing...almost like wheel hop, but i dont think its wheel hop because its not very consistant. i.e. i i spin out gradually, nothing...it only bangs when im launching the car, or shifting hard to 2nd, or 3rd....any more suggestions...

Re: Wheel hop?

Its probably a combo of both. I need to get my true duals moved around a little better. But when Im doing a burn out, or in the wet sometimes, I get a little wheel hop. This in turn makes my true duals make contact somewhere with my under carrige.

Jack you car up (use jack stands plz), then follow your exhaust from the headers back. Find where your getting close to the undercarrige. Then shake your exhaust up and down. See if its moving quite a bit. If it is, thats where your hitting.

But from what your exsplaining, it sounds just like wheel hop. You will tend to feel out throughout the whole driveline. From what Ive been reading, a set of aftermarket Lower control arms will solve your problems.

Re: Wheel hop?

My SS has no trace of wheel hop on smooth roads. It'll skip some fishtailing around a turn with some ripples, but it's still easy to control. Come to think of it, I don't think I've driven a live rear axle car that wheel hops. It's gotta be your exhaust banging around unless you consider skipping to be wheel hop.

Re: Wheel hop?

Hey, actually, it was a 2 part deal. The I pipe is hitting in the tunnle, and the rear spring was slightly out of its seat, causing a wheel hop on the one side, all is well now, except for the exhaust hitting...fixing that this weekend...
thanks all
