Post Whats the difffrence between the LS1 and the LT1?

Whats the difffrence between the LS1 and the LT1? Mechanical diffrences? How they operate?

Please, no replies like "The LS1 is FATSTER" or anything similar.

Thanks!

I think one diffence is,

The LS1's block is all Aluminum, I believe the LT1 was iron and a little bit heavyer i'm not 100% sure on this though

everything you can possibly think of is different, the only similarity is that they are both 5.7 liters. they both have different firing orders also.

LT1
  • 4" bore, 3.48" stroke
  • cast iron block, (+ iron heads???)
  • "decent" flowing heads and intake
  • OK ignition system (Opti-spark) when working properly
LS1
  • 3.9" bore, 3.62" stroke
  • all aluminum - block and heads
  • heads and intake flow better than anything GM has ever built
  • new, improved ignition - individual coil packs per cylinder - different firing order than LT1
  • "roller rockers", as well as roller lifters (vs stamped rockers on LT1??? I think)

The LS1 is simply an awesome motor, and the aluminum does save a few pounds. The LT1 can be built to compete/beat LS1's, but to buy the fastest "stock" car, the LS1 will win, hands down.

Thanks for the replys guys! Especially Captin Pete. Your reply was very informative. I would have had no idea that each cylinder would have its own coil.......

Also-

LT1 had 10.5:1 compression and reverse-flow cooling. The water pump is cam driven.

LS1 has 10:1 (I believe) compression and standard flow cooling.

You're right about the reverse flow cooling and gear driven water pump in the LT1 - I forgot about that.

While I'm not sure about the compression ratio of the LT1 (10.5:1 sounds right), the LS1 is 10.25:1 (according to this site).

Check out that site - it's in the GM performance parts online catalogue - very descriptive write-up on the LS1 (although I feel like they under-rate the HP a little - who knows?! ).
