Re: What type of oil to use

An SM rated motor oil would be the "type" people use.

Beyond that in a place like this all you will get is unsupported opinion based solely on marketing.

You could go someplace like this.
Bob Is The Oil Guy - Forums powered by UBB.threads%u2122
There they have a section where people lost the results of used oil analysis where the wear metal content of the oil is MEASURED and the oil's properties/additives are measured to see if it is wearing out. Looking for people using the same engine design as you are in a similar manner is critical because some popular oils are only mediocre in this application but might be great in a VW 1.8T motor.

Really though it is all splitting hairs, what it does allow is seeing if the $7 a quart oil is even ANY better than the $2.50 a quart stuff.

Agreed. IMO most of it is just personal preference. I use Mobile 1 though a lot of people dislike it for the LS1. A lot of people like Redline and GC. Just preference. BITOG is a great site!!

German made 0W-30 Castrol Syntec is a very popular choice.

Re: What type of oil to use

I highly recommend royal purple, I always thought that it was just a fancy name but I finally gave it a shot my average oil pressure went from 40 at idle to up close to 60.

Now this is just my preference and have heard good things about Mobil 1 or VR1

Weight wise we always use 20w-50 full synthetic

*if you go with royal purple you cant go back to other brands, again this is from a experience my buddy had.

Can you please explain why you believe the 20psi rise to be a good thing?
