Without autotap or a similar program to check realtime temps. The only way to tell is to look at the thermostat housing. On 00-02s if theres no GM part number on the housing its not a stocker.

I have a 160 stat in my LS1 and I know it works.

The scanner temp was at 215 on the street the other day and I was driving around and I immediately felt the performance loss. (normal driving) I wasnt smashing the throttle or nothin, just driving. So then I kick the fans on high and the temp went back to my normal range of 170. The engine woke back up......didnt feel sluggish like it does with 200+ degrees. I think the whole world knows, a colder engine runs faster than a hotter one.

Tell me this. what temp do you want your car to be at when you're doing a pre-stage burn-out? 170 or 210? cuz u know that temp shoots up after high revving. I dont know about yall, but I feel more better knowin my engine is cool before I race.

160 stat - thumbs-up
stock stat - hell NO
Let's not waste our time talking about seat of the pants on the street bull. I'm talking hard track numbers. Lots of them.
Oh and by the way I never said that I used a stock stat. I use a 180° stat. And will switch to a 160° when I do the heads cam because of the greater amount of heat to get rid of.

I agree with Al. On a car without heads/cam or in other words mostly stock, the car will perform as good with 210 on the temp gauge as it will with 160-180. Like Al stated this has been proven time again at the track. I've seen friends cars react the same way. Once again I've only noticed this on LS1's. The LT1 loves a much cooler engine. Just my closing .02

Apparently you have a problem with reading comprehension. So I'll cut and paste so that you can try again.

Quote:"A 160° stat is a total waste of money unless you have a lot of mods and are running higher compression or forced induction."
2nd Quote:"And will switch to a 160° when I do the heads cam because of the greater amount of heat to get rid of."

Ya get it now?
