There isn't much to do to prevent it from breaking aside from proper and controlled driving. A lot of romping on the gears, donuts, and generally aggresive driving will spell out disaster in any 10-bolt gear set.

Your best bet is to get your rearend inspected every once in a while and get a better rearend gridle. Summit, TA Performance and MAC all make covers which are basically the same. HOW MUCH they protect is in question. If you're really concerned I'd advise that you start saving up money for a 12-bolt.

Just run street tires and you will be fine. The guys who break their rear, do it by cutting insane 60's (like 1.7's) repeatedly, these guys run Nittos or some other drag slick. As long as you stay away from the grippy tires and don't try to set any 60 foot records, your rear end will be fine.

I'm sure if you posted a poll, 99% of the people who broke their stock rear did it while they were running some form of drag radial or slicks.

Ditto what 96fbirdA4 said.

I just replaced my rear since it gave out on the highway (pinion bearing failure) and it wasn't covered under warranty (dumbasses)

Anyway, with my new 4.11 gears, I am sticking to street tires and have made a dozen track passes since then. I have a Moser 12-bolt on my list of long-term mods, but that will be 2004 probably before I do it.

Use common sense, and don't bolt a set of slicks up and try to set a new track record and you should be fine.

A4 ... the rear is probably stonger than you think ... I've made over 400 passes on my stock rear end ... close to 300 of them on Hoosiers.

M6 ... it's everybit as weak as you think. If you can't afford to fix it ... don't race it. Even on street tires it's going to break eventually ... 100 passes if you're lucky ...

Good Luck
