What exactly is the weak spot in the LS1 bottom end?

Boring is using a cutting tool to shave a larger amount out of the bore leaving around .005 for the hone.
Then it's honed the last .005 to get proper piston fit.

If you only have .005 from the factory you can't use a boring tool at all. With .005 you can only hone.
