What to do???
I just bought a 99 Z28 M6 last monday. Come to find out, the stupid thing has a steel driveshaft and a 118mph speed limiter.
I don't really mind the steel driveshaft and I know the reason it came with 118 speed limiter is because of the tires from the factory, but I can't stand it. No I don't go out here and drive 120mph+ everyday, but its just the fact that its on there and I want it off.
I don't have $340 to spend on an hpp3 or any of the other reprogrammers so what should I do???
Is there any way at all for me to get it off there without spending a crap load of cash???

THIS SUCKS!!!! No where in the near future will I have the cash to throw down on heads and cam, a blower, or any big power mods like that so I guess I'm gonna have to take the shot in tha nuts and buy a programmer.
I can't stand the fact that it is on there and its got to go.

wow, that sucks. I didn't know any of the V8's were limited to 118 like the V6's! That blows! I did a top speed run on my T/A late tonight on a deserted freeway. Got it up to 145 before i had to slow down cause the freeway was ending soon
ya if your z didnt come with z rated tires then u have the gay limiter
id shoot myself
id try to get new tires at dealer get some zrtaed ones and have them change it
id force them to get it off

I had the same problem with my '98 Z. Came with the factory appearance package, which included chrome wheels, 235/55/16 tires, and a steel driveshaft. Sold the wheels/tires, but still have the driveshaft.
Didn't find out I had the limiter until I was on a dyno. Everyone thought I had a PCM problem when the car sputtered out at 5400RPM.
I acquired a VIN from a friends car (same year, tranny, etc) and had a dealer tech quietly update my program. I later had custom tuning performed so I have the my own VIN back
Seems to me I read about someone else saying they tried to encourage a dealership to change the programming when they bought new, speed-rated tires. IIRC, the dealership wouldn't do it because it didn't come from the factory with them.

Of course now I do have Z rated 245/50/16's on there. I think the dealership should do it, but I doubt they will. So would it be worth my time to go to the dealership and ask them to change it, or should I buy a programmer???
If the dealership is close by, it doesn't hurt. If you have an inside connection somewhere at a dealership that'd be your best bet.
Unless you regularly exceed ~116MPH, I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. If you can deal with a bit of downtime for shipping the PCM, I'd suggest contacting C&S Performance in Orlando. They seem to offer reasonable rates for simple things (EGR/AIR/speedo/tire height, etc.).
Their site is http://www.cs-performance.net. You can tell Tim that I sent you. On second thought, maybe he'll raise the rates if you tell him that
