What could be wrong?!?

Ok.. here are the facts...

One of the cats has failed and rattles like all hell has broken loose..

When the car is in neutral, you can rev the engine up to high rpms without issue..

When the car is in ANY gear you cannot exceed 2-3K rpm without the car sounding like it will die..

So, is there a secondary issue with my transmission now?!?!

I have no way to scan for codes and the Check engine light has been on for years (some car or precat issue)

i cant imagine a bad cat cooking the tranny in any way. they get red hot, but unless the cat was moved from stock position, it should have more than enough air space to aviod cooking other major parts. an increase in backpressure isnt going to raise your trans fluid temp much if at all. id guess 2 isolated problems or something your not seeing.

Our V-6 bird did the same thing. It's just the cat. When free reving it would rev right up because it doesn't take much air to free rev with no power. When you try to move the car it actually takes way more air and with the cat being plugged it can't pass enough air out to make any power. Think potatoe in the exhaust pipe.
I would have thought that you of all people would have gotten the cat removed or replaced by now.

Code scans - 2 ways:
  1. Any Auto Zone
  2. If you are fairly close, I have an Actron OBD II code scanner

Came in handy due to a P0430 code that I am sure was a 'goof' - I had run some Red Line Fuel System cleaner when it came on. Never had this problem before, but my Land Cruiser had the light come - and go back off by itslef ! after I used some of this same bottle of R.L.

I guess this bottle is special !

At any rate, that scanner is cool - my only regret is that I did not pony up like another ~ 40 bux for the one that can give live readings.

Oh, well.

Later !

Britt

Ok.. so here is the whole rundown...

Took my car to Parkway Chevrolet in Tomball (Northwest Houston)..
Left car there... Initially they didnt want to even perform TSB05513 because I didnt have my paper with me at the time of leaving it with them. I called GM customer care and by the time I had a rep on the phone they had called me back telling me that it would be taken care of. (the long story of version of this encounter with this particular Service Advisor: My girl pulls up with the car while I was on the phone with her (working). She tells him why she has brought the car in to her. He retorts defensively with "Where did you get this information!??" as if it were classified!?! So while I am coaching here from the phone it escalates to me being on the phone with him reading verbatim what the TSB states. He then replies to me with "I CAN READ". I explain that I do have the letter and the house is being worked on so finding anything would not be a simple task but I have no issues with calling GM and seeing if they can provide him with a copy as he is telling me that there is no way they would be "Putting on an $800 Catalytic converter on my car". I am livid at this point, demanded Customer Service phone number and then hung up with him.
When I went in to pick up the car today, I spoke to his boss and let him know what I thought of his employees customer service skills.)

The car was finished today..

I picked up the car and got a whopping 1 mile away before I was overwhelmed with a burning smell of rubber and then I noticed that my console had a crack. Up by where the 1-2-3-4-5-6-R badge sits.

So I returned, showed the service manager and he told me he would call me today and let me know if they would take care of the crack or not.... I have to call them tomorrow as I didnt get his message till too late.. The burning rubber smell they stated was normal.. normally exhaust has burning oil smell from people touching the parts with greasy hands.. rarely, if ever RUBBER...

At least now my check engine light that has been on for some 2-3 years is off and I have a fresh new cat.. again.. Im sure I will have to have it replaced by 120K miles.. so thats just 30K miles from now.. so next year! hehe

Al had it right.. Bravo! The cat was causing the odd engine rev thingy... I wasnt thinking clearly as I had way too many things on my plate (started new job, renovating kitchen and working on car.. no time to rest..)

Gotta love this board! Where else do so many poeple get QUALITY answers?!
