What Camaro?

What Camaro?
Hi all, I am new to the boards. I currently drive a 2000 Dakota R/T, but I am planning to be a Camaro owner within the next two months. I am not sure which model to get. I plan to lightly mod it and will run it at local dragstriips.
Looking for 2000, 2001 or 2002? Probably convertible.
Questions are SS or regular z28? Auto or 6 speed? Do any models accept mods better than others? Are there any problems with particular models?
Thanks very much for any help.

Re: What Camaro?
01 - 02 have the LS6 intake. Mine has a few mods done to it, and I love it. People with autos say when you swap the torque converter with an aftermarket it really wakes up the autos. Mine is an M6 and that damn skip shift crap is getting on my last nerves. I just got in my elimator that will be gone in a couple of days.
SS has the better exhaust, but if you are gonna replace with an aftermarket (i.e. Borla, Flowmaster, et...) then why get the SS for the badgeing.
This is my .02 cents

Re: What Camaro?
its all about the year
98 you gotta hit 2 keys next to eachother - not too hard but if your lazy like me then you really don't wanna do this
01 and 02 you gotta reach all the way across the keyboard to hit, definantly not for me
my favorite was 99, because its the same key just hit twice ... so i got me one

Auto (A4) or Manual (M6) is all about YOUR PERSONAL PREFERENCE!!! Drive what YOU want. There are 1 billion+ threads debating that issue!!
SS vs. Z28 (or WS6 vs. Trans-Am) --- again, it's mostly about preference. YES, there are a couple legitimate advantages in choosing an SS or WS6 over a Z28 or a T/A, but you can add those items to your Z28/TA and spend less on the car. Buy what you want for the appearance of the car (SS & WS6 have hood scoops, where others don't).
The year doesn't really matter much, but like what was previously mentioned, the '01/'02 model years came with a better intake manifold (although, a smaller cam) and they typically made a little more power than '98-'00, but not enough that I would pass on a '98-'00 if it was a nice car.
Good luck in your car search, and hope to see more of you around here.

Re: What Camaro?
SS is basically looks(wheels, hood, wing), they run the same times as the base model z...01-02's are the strongest years (has the ls6 intake)...02's seem to run even better then the 01's

Re: What Camaro?
Great. Thanks very much for the info. That's exactly what I was looking for.
This is a great site.
Hope to talk to all again when I narrow the search down.
Not so by the way, anyone need a semi quick truck? My 2000 Dakota R/T runs low 14.0's without the juice.

SS is an apperance AND suspension package, depending upon year.
go take a ride in my stock no SLP optioned 1999 SS down a bumpy road then go down the same road in a stock z28 of the same year and tell me they have the same suspension.

You'll know what car you want when you see it.
But basically all '98-'02 LS1 F-body cars are generally the same powerwise (stock) with a very slight HP (5-7hp) edge to the '01-'02 cars which if you get an M6 I believe you also get a stronger clutch from the Corvette Z06 too.
SS's and WS6's look cool but you can add the visual elements yourself and save money not just on the cost of the parts but on insurance too!
