I have a 2000 Z (124000 miles), and lately I have been hearing a loud whining sound coming from the front of the engine. It appears to be coming from the water pump but, I have not seen any coolant leaks. Does anyone have any suggestions what it might be or a process of lamination.

try the Ls1 section....could be a tensioner or something too

 

Pull the belt and turn each item by hand. Often you can feel or hear the offender, quite often it's the alternator.
If it's a idler there's a sticky in the Lsx engine section with directions on how to lube them up yourself and maybe save on a replacement.
