water pump leaking, upgrade? LS2 better?
water pump leaking, upgrade? LS2 better?
Well, next in the line of problems is my overheating problem. I have also been noticing that there had been a leak. I traced it down to the water pump an it is leaking at the bottom of the pump, where it seals to the engine.
well, whether the overheating is coming from the leak (the radiator is still mostly full) or not, it is somehting I'm going ot have to fix.
I've been checking out ebay, and there are several on sale. Some are used and going for under $50 (one is from an LS6 and is only $10, with only 4000 miles on it).
I'm still debating whether to take a gamble with a used pump, but one of my main issues is that these pages are saying that the LS6 and LS2 pumps are good upgrades for LS1 equipped cars. I can understand if maybe the LS2 pump flows better/more, but is the LS6 pump any differerant? They all supposedly mount right up.
I also saw the Meziere pump but $500 for 5 hp is not worth it, plus I like to keep things mechanical as much as possible.
Here is the page I was looking at:
LS6 pump: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LS1-L...spagenameZWDVW
LS2 Pump: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LS1-L...spagenameZWD1V
Thanks for your suggestions.

Re: water pump leaking, upgrade? LS2 better?
Blackrat,
There is no flow difference between the LS1,LS2 & LS6 pumps.
They all have the same casting, impellor and bearing. The older pumps
have a bolted rear cover and the new ones have a pressed in cup.
Some radiator shops might be able to rebuild your current one. IMHO
you never know what you are getting with a used pump.
P.S. I work for GM powertrain and have worked on these engines.

Thanks for the answer. I appreciate your email as well. Based on what you said, I'll go ahead and either rebuild this one or pick up one from napa. Thanks again.

I have one, because I want to cool down my engine in the staging lanes without starting the engine.
