Water Pump Alert

I brought my '02 SS to the dealer under warranty to cure a slight miss at 1500 RPM or so. They determined I have no miss (I do!), and also found that the waterpump needed replacement (at 32,000 miles!). There have been several posts about owners noticing a whiff of coolant now and then. I would advise you to check the water pump for seepage. Incidentally, with the new pump, the engine is much quieter. I didn't realize the racket the old pump was making.

Now, about that miss. Can anybody recommend a tune-up shop in the San Diego area?

What kind of noise did your water pump cause that made it so noisey?

It's difficult to describe, but I would call it a loud hissing, which I thought was due to the serpentine belt. Perhaps it was, since the belt was detensioned and retensioned for the job. It wasn't the usual water pump grumblings, trust me.

so all that work and they didn't fix the miss?

i mean...you said the told you there wasn't a miss...all that takes to determine is a scanner

sounds like you need to have a chat with the dealer

i would check your plugs and wires first, they are common causes of misses.

Re: Water Pump Alert

Did it only make this hissing noise when you first start it for the first couple of minutes or was it making this noise constantly?

Constantly, cold, hot, no matter. It's gone now.

I did get a new waterpump out of it, but no, the miss was not fixed. It occurs at about 1500 RPM, and is most noticible in 1st gear, with less vehicle inertia to smooth it out. The car starts b-b-b-bucking b-b-b-big time, at about 15 MPH. The mechanic took it out and flogged it on the freeway for five miles, and said, in effect, I have a good imagination. I'm bringing it in for tightening down and lubing the rear shock top bushings (sound like a canary farm back there), and getting some of the steering wheel control lights replaced this week. Maybe I'll try again about the miss. I can demonstrate it right there on the lot!

Re: Water Pump Alert

Hey Bert;

Gracias for the "heads up" on the water pump. Will keep an eye out for leaks. Good luck on your "miss".

Sometimes you CAN have a miss and the comp. dosn't catch it enough to thro a check light...

Re: Water Pump Alert

Is it normal for it to make that hissing noise when it first starts? Is that just like that for the first couple of minutes because it's warming up?

Hey Bayer-Z28--

I checked out your (car's) webpage. Very nice. Thanks for your service to our country . . . And keep your head down, man! That's quite a rig you operate in Saudi. Ever do a 1/4 mile time with it? I know, you'd need a calendar.
