Does anyone know if I can find out my car's nodel number. For example "1230 out of 5000?" Is there a website or some other place i can find out? Thanks.

I'd like to know also. If the last numbers of the VIN also indicate the sequence on the assembly line then I have the 717th Firebird built for the 2000 model year.

Generally, at least in fourth gen cars, the last five numbers are sequential. If you tour an assembly plant though, you'll probably see a numerical range of about a thousand throughout the production line. I know 1999 was a sequential year, but I'm pretty sure not every year was. I can't remember if '00 or '01 was weird like that. If you do have a low VIN and your build date was early in the year, it most likely is one of the early models.

There is no way to determine which number your car is in a series, unless it is a numbered car like an SLP/ASC car. And the "sequential" number does not necessarily indicate the order they are built in, but rather the order the VIN's were assigned to an order.

After reading chuck's post I should probably further clarify what I said in mine. Even with an ASC or SLP car, there is no guarantee the number assigned to your car is sequential for those companies either, as cars are held back frequently because of problems during production. That's one of the reasons you'll see VINs out of order on the production line at an assembly plant, but in general, they'll be in the same vicinity. When I toured the Corvette plant last week, I believe the VINs I saw on cars were all in the range of around 6200-7200.

So, even if your VIN from GM ends in 00001 or your SLP build number is #001, there's no guarantee that car rolled off the line or was shipped first, but it was assigned the first number of that model year (although remember I thought either '00 or '01 didn't go in order like that). So if you know the total number of cars produced for your model year, there's nothing wrong with using your VIN as an identifier and saying your car is the 717th Firebird out of xx,xxx built that year. A few SLP car owners might get their undies in a bunch, but that's an issue they'll have to work out with themselves
