Valvetrain noise...what's normal and what's not?
I'm suspect of the valvetrain on my 2002 Z28 due to the "noise" factor it puts out. When I first start the car (hot or cold) the valvetrain will tick and make other clicking and rattle noises loud enough to hear in the car at idle with the hood closed and the windows up. It's done this since I bought it a few months ago. The car had 4500 miles on it then and is up to 9500 now.
Anyhow, once I run it through a couple gears it quiets down to the point that I can barely hear the valvetrain even with my ear to the cylinder heads. So, is this normal? I'm wondering if I had a collapsed lifter and it was "pumping up" at higher RPMs, thus decreasing the sound.
The car's still under warranty....but I'm curious if this is a normal LS1 thing or just my car. As a counterpoint, my LT1 camaro never let out a squeak from the valvetrain......
Anyhow, comments would be appreciated. Thanks.
