Upgrading the brakes........anyone upgrade yet?
Upgrading the brakes........anyone upgrade yet?
It has come down to it....I can't stop as fast as I want to, I'm as worried about comming to a stand still as I am going fast but recently I feel like the car can't stop when I floor the brakes, if someone gets in the way, or even when someone cuts me off, I feel like my brakes are unworthy. I have the 17 stock zr1 style rims and I am trying to find a rotor and caliper that would fit in this rim. Anyone upgrade their brakes to a big brake kit for the front? Anyone have any more information regarding big brakes? Lemme know, thanks

there's a few options..
first of all, getting better tires helps braking, since thats what ultimatly grips the road. make sure your brakes are bled and are good working order...
Actually, the stock LS1 brakes are relatively good. So the cheapest and easiest option is getting better pads.. like hawk hps or hp+.. You don't want to get something to racey, cause they'll chew up your rotors and probably won't work effectively at street temps
Then there's the C5 front brake upgrade.. basically you use the slightly better vette calipers with the vette rotors (12.8" i believe) I'm planning to do that (just need to save up on the parts)
Finally there's various big brake kits... Bear GT+ I believe is just the c5 caliper with a 13" rotor.. companies like Movit sell huge porsche rotors and calipers. Wildwood (although the only kit I know of isn't too street friendly.. These kits get really pricey.. If I had the cash, I'd get the Movit porsche big brake kit.. but thats like $3000 and massive overkill for a street car... Plus the pads and rotors aren't cheap. They may or maynot fit the stock 17" rims.. (but I think they do, barely)
For roadcourse use(racing/lapping at a track), the best bang for the bucks seems to be the C5 front brake upgrade, good higher temp pads and fresh rotors, and air ducting.

Ken gave some excellent advice. You need to make clear your intended use. If its to remain as a street car, then the C5 upgrade kit from Bob Bishop (latepaex) will help much--Stock C5 calipers w/C5 rotors and SS lines. An alternate upgrade, as Ken noted, is the Baer kit. I have it and it works well at the track w/adequate brake ducting. others include the Stoptech kit, Wilwood and Mov'it.
You must first determine if you need the upgrade. Did you remove the fluid from the Master cylinder (use a turkey baster-works great) and replace w/fresh fluid? Did you bleed each line furthest to closest? Have you replaced your pads w/known good quality (hawk blue, Performance friction, SBS)?? I'd suggest you try the above and if not satisfied, then consider the C5 upgrade or the Baer GT+ kit.

I finally broke down and purchased a Prospeed kit. It's very similar to the Movit kit. Stopping power is freaking unbelievable!
Before that, I had a C5 conversion that Lou at LG Motorsports offers. It too was a nice upgrade.
But, it sounds like you are just over-heating your existing pads. You were never clear, but I can only assume you are sporting OEM brakes.
Upgrading the pad compaound might just do the trick. Calling Larry at Carbotech, talking with him about your needs and listening to his recommendations will get put you at ease about your brakes
Good Luck
