update on plug swap...

Ok, here is an update on my plug swap. I had swapped out the Bosch platinum’s for some NGK TR55s. No new wires at this time. I had gapped them at .06. My car started running like crap, it would idle at 800-900 rpm (acceptable?) Then regapped them to .055. Still ran like crap. Then I swapped in some brand new Taylor 409 wires with new Bosch platinum’s. Still runs like crap. Cruising at 35 mph the car feels like its surging, not to bad though, but annoying. When you accelerate to 38 or more it smooth’s out. When I took out the NGK’s, which were in only about 10 days or so, the number one plug looked different from #2 thru #8. The center of number one looked brown and looked like it was soaked in something, (gas I know). The white center on #2 thru #8 were still white. So my question is could the coil pack on #1 be bad?

Sounds like a possibility... think you could swap out that coil pack with the one beside of it and see if the problem follows to that cylinder? If it does, then of course signs point towards it being the coil pack

Something else that you could maybe try is to unplug the wire from the #1 plug and have a friend start the car for a second or two... just long enough to see if the end of the wire makes a snapping noise where it's firing. I have no idea if this option is safe on the LS1's but it's something I'd try. I did it on my old 3.4 to locate a bad wire... don't see anything wrong with it as long as you keep the end away from anything electrical.

What's the factory call for in terms of gapping for the LS1's? Is it supposed to be .060"?

The factory sticker on the fender does say to gap them to .06

Pulled the #1 plug and and hit the starter and had spark on it, so I don't think its the coil pack, so now I have no more ideas.

Re: update on plug swap...

heres a thought, I also did the free egr mod when I did the plug the first time. Would cutting the end off make my car run like crap at 40mph?
