Turbo?

I took my 98 ls1 camaro z28 to the track and ran 14.3. its pretty stock but pissed. Im starving for some more power but this is also my daily driver. would this turbo, or any be a good idea. I figured i could have it boosting a couple psi round town then 10-15 at the track.

Re: Turbo?

What was the MPH? That's a better measure of HP than the ET. What was your 60-ft time? What is the elevation and what were the weather conditions? Is the car an auto or manual trans? If auto, which rear axle ratio do you have?

Before you start adding stuff, you need to find out A) if it's down on power, and B) if it is, why?

Re: Turbo?

MPH was 99. auto, 2.73 gears, elevation was 2400 ft, weather was prolly low 60s not very humid. the 60 ft time i wanna say was like 2.2 or somin but could be wrong on that. I had pretty good launches, asr was off, and the shifting was good not great. left it in drive. did maybe 2.5k rpm launch. there was a cross wind but saw cars hitting 9's (non street). it has 150k on it so maybe a tune, plugs wires etc? im runnning full synthetic. my gears are a little shaved from driving with a bent axle for a while but that shouldnt mess my time up? Im just lost and really frustrated any help or ideas would be great. I would prolly be willing to put 3 grand into it tops but want it to be reliable for yrs to come

Re: Turbo?

That elevation effects your power. tune up should've been done a long time ago around the 100k mark. upgrade your gears to 3.73s with a high stall converter and you will see your time drop a lot

Re: Turbo?

What all should I do for the tune up? and I was looking at 3.73's on ebay I just wasnt sure which ones would be the right ones. I have posi asr and all that. and how hard is it to install the high stall converter?

Re: Turbo?

See my other post on gears. I would be careful putting a turbo kit as a first mod. I would work my way up to that. Stall is a great mod. You have to drop the transmission to install it. Get a lid, headers, tune, stall, and you should be in the low 13's. Then start looking at heads/cam to get 12's or even high 11's depending on how much you spend.

Your 60 foot time of 2.2 is really bad, too (but normal for high mileage, stock tires, mostly stock, with tall gears). The time you save there translates 2:1 on your final time. So if you improved your traction and got a 60 foot of 2.0, you could run a 13.9 (0.4 second improvement) with no changes at all except traction.

Re: Turbo?

99mph at 2400 ft + density altitude likely of 3000-3500 or so isnt too far off I guess. My stock 99 went 104mph at 1200ft in a DA of around 2500. Higher altitude would be slower but it went 13.4 stock, auto with 2.73's. Another friends 02 z28 b4c auto car went 13.3's at 103 stock so altitude kills some power. 5mph seems alittle excessive but these cars vary it seems.

Turbo kit is not for you. Theres alot to it than just buying a kit. A cam swap is much more effective on a LS1 for bang/buck and ease of operation.
