Trans Valve Body, What Does It Do?

Trans Valve Body, What Does It Do?
My car is in the shop because my tranny has been acting funny. They are starting by replacing the valve body and the pressure switch.
Can anyone give me a basic explanation of what the Valve body does in the trans? Can this cause slipage?
