Traction Control

I think I have found the right LS1 for me, except that it does not have ASR (traction control) on it. With me not having a car right now, I am sort of limited to which ones I can get and this one is pretty close to what I need. But I want traction control. Is there any way for me to install it aftermarket (the same system), how much would it cost if I did, and is it even worth it?

Thanks all!

Todd

I never heard of somone putting in ASR afterwards. Even if it's possible, I am sure it wouldn't be cheap. I think you should keep looking for the exact car you want.

you think it would be that much 99blackss?
i hear of people taking theirs off because it makes the engine bay look less appealing
so i figure they wouldnt mind selling it
i think the hardest part would just be installing it

either way, i think your foot is the best form of traction control

When we got our '01 SS on the 24th of december.. I had read about the most-talked about stuff dealing with fourth-gens... so I knew what ASR ment.. but I left it on.. we did speed off quite a bit, and the tires never even chirped.. I'm sure quite easily COULD have, with ASR off, though. If anything, I'd say ASR is great, mainly for keeping your tires from going bald...

You would have to get a new new rear end because cars that did not come with traction control came with 3 channel abs. Those that did come with traction control came with 4 channel abs.

I dont think it is worth anything, It annoying. I just unplugged mine. It would be hard to install I would say and expensive. I know the the ABS unit is different because it has 2 separate brake lines to the rear. instead of one that T's off at the axel. Casey

I hate my traction control. I used it when i first got my Z and learned my right foot does a better job than that thing. I don't think it's a huge deal really, not worth the bother of installing it.

my t/a has trac control and i use to just leave it on. then one day i got into some trouble and the damn thing cut power when i needed it! (spinning on gravel, but i was pulling out in traffic. ) cuttin the power was the WORST thing it could do, i would have been 100% better off throwing hte rear out and controling it (something i did all the time in my lt1 which i drove every day, in any condition, never had any trouble). so here i am in middle of the road, diagnal across 2 lanes, with trac control having cut power. not cool at all. almost got rail roaded by cars in each direction barreling down at 40+mph

to this day, i have always turned off trac. control. and as camaroRSguy says, my right foot is the best traction control system.

Thanks everyone! I drove a non-traction control car for a while (an LT1...in the rain a lot), so I know all about spinning out..but I am only 17 (about to turn 18) so my driving skill is a lot worse than most of you guys.

I only want it for when it is raining and for the snow and ice. It will be off unless under those conidtions.

ASR is alright, but I wouldn't care if I didn't have it. I just leave it on when I drive.

When the ASR is turned off, and when you're accelerating hard, the car feels MUCH more free and accelerates somewhat faster.

I really don't like how it'll push the pedal back at your foot and kill engine power if your tires spin.

And yes, the tires can chirp significantly with the ASR on, I've done it before.

well my buddy with a 96 z28 says he leaves his on just to keep his new tires from "disappearing"
other than that, i dont think he really finds it that useful for much else cause he just drives a truck in the snow

If your going to be driving in the snow alot it is worth having. And since your from New Jersey I'm sure you get your fair share of snow.

Other then snow driving it has be worthless to me.

Thumbs up Count me as PRO Traction Control.

Why not have it ?

If you do not like it, it can be turned off, and SLP & others sell switches that change it to default OFF instead of ON when the car starts.

(If you want that.)

Mine has kept the rear end from going out on a corner at least twice on a dry road , and I feel more secure w/ it on.

I won't tell you that it helps save the tires, though.

I burned 1/2 the tread off the GSC's on the T/A in 11K - with it on. Lots of WOT downshifts at 30 MPH led to that - the GSC's quit squalling when spinning after ~ 5K or so, and then you ccan't hear 'em.

It does help me practice street launches w/ the SS - I've learned (to some extent) how to feather the throttle to get max acceleration out of the hole.

In fact, when I bought the T/A I had found a white '99 Z28 w/ cloth, cassette, and T-Tops. Ran well, and that dealer was willing to give me more for a trade in - but it had no ASR.

S'allright - the T/A's have much better seats - when you get the optional lumbar suport.

Chevy Bastages !!

My .02.
