totalled her...need help!
hey guys, didnt know where to post this, but i need some info on what's going to happen with the insurance co. I was driving in the rain, on the freeway with no one around ~50 mph and hydroplaned into a wall. i guess it was the tires or something? i really dont know. the car was drivable, but the body shop says that its pretty bad and the insurance company will probably want to just total it. need to know...when they do that, how much will i get for the car? retail value? trade in value? can i take my parts home...like my rims, lid, shifter, etc.? how about my broken hood? if not, will they reimburse me for those things? please inform me to the best of your knowledge...i'm completely heartbroken over the whole thing. thanks

Luckily I had "one free accident." You can take all of your aftermarket parts off, but everything stock has to stay on the car. You could probably get away with taking a few things though. Your insurance will most likely go up, but they won't screw you (well at least my company didn't). Oh and sorry to hear about what happened
Good Luck
I am sorry to hear about your car being totalled, however cars can be replaced, your body can't. If you came out of the crash ok, thank God.
I totalled a 94 Z28 back in 2000. I to had the rearend come around on me in the rain at 45 MPH, and crashed into a concrete divider on the freeway, so I would not be slung back into traffic, when I hit the wall, I jammed the steering wheel in the direction of the wall and skidded down the wall to a stop. Needless to say, the car was totalled. This is what happened.
The car was towed to a holding lot that the insurance company uses, so they can inspect the vehicle. At that time you will be able to remove only your personal belongings from the vehicle. You should remove your car regestration, insurance card, and any personal I.D.
Next the insurance company will take into consideration how many miles you have on your vehicle and determine its condition prior to the crash, i.e. paint, interior, engine, rims, drivetrain.
The insurance company then uses an independant agency to compair your car (prior to the crash) with a minimum of 5 other vehicles of your cars age that they will find for sale at other car lots. They will compair the milage of the cars, interior, exterior, engine and drivetrain, using a method of "above standard", "standard" , "below standard". They will assign different dollar amounts for how your car fairs between the sample cars for sale. After the independant assement was completed, I was allowed to remove any custom items from the car that was not stock.
My 94 Z28, had only 24,000 miles on it (whcih was very low), all the compairison cars had 50,000 +. Because my car was a "garage queen" it scored much higher in the compairison with the other sample cars for sale. I had $1,000 dollar deductable collision, and that amount was taken off of the dollar value at the end of the compairison.
My total payout from the insurance company (counting the $1,000 deductable collision) came to $14,200. I signed over the pink slip, and they handed me the check. I had just registered my car for the year, so they cut me a seperate check to cover the registration fee.
Hope this helps you out in some way.
Good luck!!

Sorry about that man!! Same thing here (just to tell you so you don't feel alone), I was driving in the rain getting on the interstate in my 94 camaro, hydroplan went across 5 lanes and hit the wall backwards. Luckely the wing on my car saved my hatch and I fixed the car myself for about $200. Anyway, my buddy hydroplaned in his 96 Mustang, Totaled it, his insurance company gave him a value with all the aftermarket parts, and price back to stock. They were going to pay for the vortec, $3000 rims, and many other parts. Still sucked for him though. He ended up getting 13,000 for the car and they let him keep the car. He sold it for about $4000 and bought a new cobra. Bad thing was he had about $40,000 in the car. Maybe you will have the option to keep your car and get money. This worked best for him because they were only going to give him $1,500 more for them to keep the car. He got more money this way. Good luck
thanks for the replies guys. just curious...if the hood is broken, can i take it, and if i do, do i have to replace it with something? I want to hang it on my wall above my wet bar in memory.
Also, the yoks handled exceptionally well in the rain up until this happened, I will never drive in weather like that again (I could hardly see), and I may need to change tires.
and, my girlfriend was in the car with me and we hit on her side, and i was most relieved that she was okay. I will feel much better once I find out how much I'm getting for my car.

Hey man, sorry to hear about your accident... I know how it feels... the whole insurance process is not fun at all go through....
At least you and your g/f are ok... in the end, that's really the bottom line...
