Just to clear things up a bit,

the first number in a tire size.....ie...275....is the tires tread width in MM.
The second number......ie....55... is the percentage of the tires width that is equal to the sidewall height from the outside of the rim to the outer radius of the tire.
The third number is obviously the inside diameter of the tire....or size rim it will be going on.

So if you have lets just say the 275/40-17 it would make it a 17" rim, 275mm wide at the tread and 40% of that tall or 110mm from the outer edge of the rim. or 4.33071 inches now double that since you have tread on both side of your rim ( I'd hope ).
= 8.66142, now add in the size of the rim, 17"= 25.66142 inches = outside diameter of your tire.

Clear things up a bit? You can figure the rest of them out yourself.

Actually, Nitto makes three different versions of their 555. There's the regualr street version 555, which is popular only because people like buying them to match their drag radials out back. It has more or less the same tread design, appearance wise, but that's where the similarities stop.

Then there's the 555R, which is the drag radial. And last, but not least, is the 555R II. It's Nitto's street legal road racing tire. And from what I understand through a few friends of mine that have used them, they are a great compromise for both a track tire and a street tire, just like the drag radials.

oh yeah and a general rule of thumb, the more surface area put against a surface, the more friction you can get. friction=traction. Wider the better!

Not necessarily in drag racing. You can have a narrower tread width w/more traction (to a certain extent) if you have taller sidewalls (less tire shock)...especially if you have wrinkle walls. I'm in no way saying a 80 series is going to hook up better than a 40 series.

Read my post again. I listed the tire diameter of the 255 as being shorter than the 275. This was the comparison of the 2 tires and sizes being discussed. You have to diferentiate them some way. Thus saying the 255 is shorter which will put the speedometer off. Get it?

not true.. the shortest easiest way I can explain this: you only want enough tire to get you launched.. 315's on a 300rwhp car is overkill.. 245's hook if you get the right ones and know how to launch. all too often people think that its easier to just go wider and not take the time to research tires and rubber compounds.. then adjust tire inflation at the track to experiment and fine tune your car for the track.

TIRERACK.COM

I have yet to save less than $75 by using them even with shipping and having someone mount and blance, and that is for top brand tires compared to off brands like Dayton offered by local tire shops.

Brian,
Oops, my bad... I thought I saw "17" all over his original post. Must've been an oversight on my part.

Cheers!
