Kumho 712 - 275/40/17
Nitto 555 - 255/40/17

they both cost the same price for 4 tires, what should i do ? go with Nitto 255 or Kumho 275 ?

if you have the time drop a line backing your vote

Lightbulb I voted Kumho.

Because:

1) You did not specify 555 R's , so I assume they are street tires for all the way around use (front & rear) .

2) I have had good luck w/ Kumho's - and, believe it or not , last trip out to the track (Sunday) I was able to cut 1.890 60's on them. (That's great for me & my driving skill ! )

That is with a 2800 stall, but w/o any tire pressure modification - I drove in, ran, and drove out.

Plus, they handle great in the rain @ highway speeds.

My .02.

1)275 40ZR 17 (Whatever the stock F1 size was)

2)Ride is fine, IMHO - it's a sports car, so it's stiffer than a passenger car. No difference from the F1's that I noticed, but then again I had the F1's for 4K & the Kumho's for 24K now.

(Bought car used.)

3)Sorry - I can't answer a snow question. It snows in Houston once every 10 or 15 years - if & when it does again, I'll be in the 4 wheel drive Suburban w/ the car safely nestled in the garage.

I say safe as:

People in Houston drive like idiots in the rain. Snow & Ice paralyzes the city as there is no real method(or need) to deal w/ it here. Plus, in 2 wheel drive, I don't know how well I would fare, either.

Kumho. Hands down. Better handling in wet/snow; better treadwear; less road noise.

Are we done now???

Why would you put a 255 on there anyway? It was meant for a 275, and if you go down 2 sizes, you will be stretching the sidewalls of the tires outwards, therefore, making it look like ****.

OK, that makes even less sense then, because the stock Z28 wheel is 16"x8", so how do you plan on putting a 17" tire on there? A 255 would be alright on that wheel, but if you put a 275 on it, do you have any idea what type of bulge you're going to create in the sidewall? You also know that your contact patch will be rolled to the outside from where the too big a tire has been squeezed on the too small a wheel. You will have effectively decreased your contact patch too less than that of the stock 245 size. Do you understand what I'm saying now that what you have said makes absolutely no sense whatsoever?

"Oops", huh, Brian? Guess you missed that part about 17" rims while you were getting up on your horse! Piece of humble pie for ya???

Hey no harm, no foul... it was evident somewhere in there that you had his best interest in mind.

Here is the deal. The Z28 came with 245/50-16, thats a 25.7" diameter tire.
The 275/40-17 is also a 25.7" tire

The 255/40-17 is a 25" tire.

I think this is what UnbeleivableLS1 was getting at.

You run the 255 and your speedo will be off. You'll also have a little thinner tread width but still retain the short sidewalls and a little higher effective gear ratio for less traction. You'll have a larger gap between your fenderwells and your tire. Fuel milage will drop slightly.

All this will be slight, but it'll be there. Why go with a shorter tire when you can get the proper size for the same cost?

Also, don't expect either tire to do well in the snow. They're both listed as summer tires. Get some snow tires for your 16" wheels si you still have them. Or you can check some all seasons out on tirerack.com. They have Sumitomos for $99/tire in the 275/40 if you want cheap. Or you can get some other, but ya they'll cost more than the Kumho's.

hey Green4Speed thanks alot for clearing all that stuff out for me...
i actually didn't know that 255 on 17" will screw up the "balance" of gas/milage and other factors..

thanks alot buddy

You run the 255 and your speedo will be off

this refers to the tire tread width. the speedo will not be affected.

Not true, a 245/50/16 = 25.7", whereas a 255/50/16 measures 26.1".

Oh, and DS01Z28.....nowhere in any of his posts, including his original, did he say anything at all about having or purchasing 17" wheels. Not until after I made my 2nd reply did he say anything at all about SS rims.

So, tell me, did you enjoy serving yourself that humble pie?

ROFL

I thought that the nitto 555 were drag radials. Maybe not, but if they are, why would you want them all the way around?
