Question Tires

I need some advice on picking my new set of tires. I just got a new hood....http://www.vfnfiberglass.com/site.htm ...stingray bolt on hood........haven't seen it cuz it's still at the body shop...and I am getting a new set of tires tomorrow. I was hoping to get some advice on what brand of tires I should price out. I'm not ordering online, this is going to be done the old fashion way. The Z has stock 17" rims. I'm in Chicago and I don't drive it in snow....MUCH. I'm most concerned with handling since I have most of my fun just driving around, looking for chumps....I mean races.

Any advice, suggestions? Much appreciated.

Is your car an SS? Since when do Z's come with 17" wheels stock?

Nope not an SS. I went off what my boyfriend said....17's.....then I called the Goodyear place we bought tires from and we got 245/50/16 Eagle HP Ultra Plus. So I guess the answer to your question is .....Never? Anyway. I just got a price of $752.80 for 4 Eagle HP's. Is that a good price?

I just put on BF Goodrich g-force KDW on the '95Z. At Discount Auto, less than $600 total out-the-door. A good tire for the price. They did have to order the 245/50-16's for me. That took about a week to get them. Do a search on tires and a lot of info will come up. Later>>>>>>>

KDWs are an awesome tire for the price, I'd either get those or the new kuhmos(not the 712s). I think either will be a great choice. Also if you have the 9 or 9.5" wide tires go with 275s not 245s.

Would I have to change my rims to get a wider tire? I want to get the best lookin tire for my buck and now is the time for me to change the whole look cuz I'm replacing all 4 of them. So I guess 275 is an indicator of how wide the tire is if 245 is a thinner tire...right? What's the 50 about? 245/50/16

Help!

245 is the cross section width of the tire in millimeters, 50 is the aspect ratio. That tells you that the sidewall height is 50% of the width of the tire, the 16 is the diameter of the wheel.

If you change your tire size (height) it will cause your speedometer to read wrong. High or low depending on what size tire you put on. Unless the dealer can flash the pcm for the tire change or get something aftermarket to calibrate the speedo back in. Check out this tire size calculator.

I would say the Kumho Exsta MX's would be the best tire for a lower price for you. You should be able to fit alittle wider tire on those stock rims then the 245's I say you should step up to 255's or 265's if they have them. Nitto's are also very good tires but they are alittle more expensive. I have both sets of tires on 18 in rims and both perform very well.

What I was saying was if your rims are 17inch was that they are probably ss rims which are either 9 or 9.5" wide depending whether they are stock or aftermarket. If your tires are indeed ss rims then you should put a 275 on there. The 275 indicates the number of Millimeters of width, so indeed the 275 is about an inch wider than the 245. Where in the chicago land area are you located? I live right over in the northwest suburbs(naperville), maybe I've seen you around.

Thanks for all the info guys! I ended up getting 2 more Eagle HP's 245/50/16 because I was told that 2 of my tires were like new. So I guess I'll hold out til the summer to get another set. I also ended up getting a "system" for the car. Bass box, infinity speakers, 10 cd changer....WOOOHOOO!!!! Replaced the front pads with hi end stock instead of the ceramic pads I had cuz the mechanic @ the Chevy dealer said without the hi performance rotors the pads aren't really worth it. So I guess I have to add rotors to the list! BTW, just hit 100k yesterday. Warranty work is over . Anyone know how many miles Chevy's run for nowadays? I got a 1998 Black Z28 with a "chip".

I reside in the Wheeling area. But you can find me on 294 or 90 most of the time. Any good places in Naperville to cruise? Use to live on Ogden and Rt. 59.

Thanks again for all the good advice. I love it here!

Thumbs up

Try checking out Rolling Meadows, off of 53 and kirchoff ? The McDonalds parking lot area on a weekend.

What about that drive-in off of 83 and Dundee ?

Make sure you get a tire that is capable of dealing with the snow you will encounter, if you don't have winter wheels. You will be very disapointed with a 3 season tire even in light snow. I'm not sure about the Goodyear model you mentioned (snow rating), be sure your Goodyear Rep. knows you need a 4 season tire. The Dunlop SP5000 are a highly rated 4 season tire. I use the Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP, which has excelent rain performance for my (Seattle) weather, but is not designed for snow use. Having the right performance tire for conditions makes for year round fun.
