Thinking of getting a 1998 camaroSS
Thinking of getting a 1998 camaroSS need to know alittle about it.
Thinking of getting a 1998 camaroSS but I need to know a little about it.
OK first what did they change about the car from 97 to 98 Besides the ovious Front of the car. And would the 98SS beat a 97SS? And are they Revlimited? And what is the factory horse power on the SS.. What kind of drag times could I expect? And How much could I get one for with about 60-70K mi.
THANKS,
Jeremiah Betterton
PS sorry for all the Questions!!

They went from the LT1 to the LS1 engine. Factory rating for the LT1 SS was 305 hp, LS1 SS is 320 hp. The LS1's were a tad underated. Both have their strong suits, but the LS1 is a better motor overall. LT1's should run 13.5-14, and LS1's should run 13.0-13.7 give or take. I wouldn't pay more than $11,000 for a 98. Hope this helps.

the 97 ss is much harder to find. The 98 ss is quite a bit faster the a 97 ss(assuming it isn't of of the hundred that came with the lt4) I would definatley go with the 98 ss.97 ss had the lt1, the 98 has the ls1 engine. a 98 ss is rated at 320 horsepower but actual horsepower is in fact higher. a 98 ss is prolly good for about a 13.2-13.6 quarter mile time if it is a manual. Im not sure what the 97 ss does it in, prolly a high 13. You could probably find a 98 ls1 camaro ss for around 14k. maybe a little less. The z28 would be cheaper and still give out the same performace. hope this helps
98ss
I have a 1998 ss with the m6. It came with the slp options. Exhaust, suspension, differential. They are fast. My brother has a 1996 and there pretty close but mine will beat it. They are rev limited. about 6000 rpm... they are speed limited at 159 mph....
My car in the quarter mile went 13.5 at 108. My 60' sucked so it will go faster. The only thing I have to say is check to make sure the rearend isnt going bad. I have 55,000 on it and around 55 mph the rear whines. I also had the tranny rebuilt and the new parts didnt mesh well with the others.......to make a long story short I got a new tranny from GM . I had mine dynoed. It dynoed at about 320 rwhp 360 ft lb torque.
They are great cars. I opted to get the ss. If you plan on modifying it dont get one..........get a z28. They are cheaper but if you are planning on modifying it you will take off all the parts the ss option puts on. I wish I had a z28 sometimes. But I do like that I already have bilstein shocks.,,, auburn differential....from the slp package. ......You know who SLP is right. GM sends the cars to them for special options to be installed.
Good luck

My car has the hotchkis suspension package with the swaybars, lower control arms and panhard bar. I am going to replace it with LG Motorsports stuff.....The SS is a good package its just the one I got didnt come with chrome rims and the exhaust was too quit.....The SS hood is awesome though. There really arent too many SS's around by me. There all 6 bangers or z28's.
Sounds like he doesn't know much about the Ls1 itself, the Ls1 is the same displacement as the Lt1, 5.7 lieters but it is all aluminum, It is a modern engine and with a M6 will get around 23 MPG average which is more than the Lt1 will give. Test drive a trans am too, same drivetrain but those cars are so unique in looks, there's nothing else like them.
The ls1's power is so much smoother than the lt1. My bro has one and I have driven it many times. Were going to the track saturday to line them up again. I beat him everytime. I even missed a shift..........(old stock POS shifter) and still beat him. I now have the Pro 5..........no more missed shifts.
