Terrible screeching sound, can someone help me??

Hi guys, tonight i had my 2000 Z28 running in the garage i left it for a few minutes then came back out to hear a very loud terrible screeching sound. I believe its coming from the top pulley on the left hand side. I think its the tensioner or idler pulley? It sounds like a terrible metal to metal sound, the car idles fine, runs fine, its just this terrible noise. What could this be and how is it fixed? I actually seem to remember hearing this noise for a few seconds every now and then when the car would run, then it would go away, now its there and its not going away. THanks

I should also add that all the belts on the engine have been replaced, so im sure its not the belts.

I have an update, i turn on the AC and the noise stops, i have a feeling the AC compressor crapped out, would this be a good possibility?

Very possible. Mine sounded like a supercharger before it self destructed. It could also be the AC pulley/clutch assembly.

Well, have you noticed any differences with how the A/c works or sounds yet? When you get home from driving, and switch the switch off MAX and onto OFF, does it still have the same decompression sound?

I'm not much of a hands-on-guy, I can only suggest that you mention anything about that.

Could it be possible that your alternator just needs some kind of lubrication?
