Tensioner Noise - Question

The tensioner on my '02 Z makes sort of a "tinny", squeeking noise. It changes pitch when I place a few fingers on top of the tensioner and apply force downward. My original GM warranty expires on the 22nd of this month. Has anyone had something similiar or give me an idea what might be wrong? Bearings inside the tensioner?

Gracias if anyone can help/offer suggestions.

Re: Tensioner Noise - Question

If it's still under warranty take it in.

That's what warranty's for.

Re: Tensioner Noise - Question

A common problem is the pulley not the tensioner, another cause could be the belt.

Re: Tensioner Noise - Question

Replaced belt is less than 400 miles old. Will keep what you said in mind on the pulley. Appointment made for Monday before warranty runs out.

Thank you both.

Re: Tensioner Noise - Question

Today I tookoff both my tensioner and idler pully and cleaned them and packed them with grease. Over time the grease leaks out and they start making noise. Now I have no squeeks.

blacknight;

Thanks to you, also. It TRULY amazes me the depth of knowledge displayed at this site, and other Camaro-owner's sites. Everyone's sharing of info is appreciated, since I am learning things each and every day.

Re: Tensioner Noise - Question

Update;

My local Chevy dealer replaced both the tensioner and the AC compressor - all parts/labor under warranty. Cannot imagine what they would have charged me otherwise. Makes me consider (yet again) an extended warranty on the Z.

"Hats off" to all you folks!

Re: Tensioner Noise - Question

Go for it. I knew I would never put that many miles on my z, so would never use it (98 with now 47k on it....). My 2 new cars (Xterra and wifes Scion) have 100k mile warranties.... Only like $1100. 1 transmission and it is paid for.....
