Question Tell me about car ramps

Ok so now I have my 01 Z28 to work on over the winter as my new toy. The only problem is I'm used to working on my daily driver which is a 4wd diesel pick up truck. I can easily get under it but not the Z28. I already have jack stands for the pickup but will need the ramps for my first mod, SFC's

The thought of crawling under it on ramps really scares me! Any tips on car ramps as far as what ones are good and safety tips would really be appreciated.

Glen

Ramps are fine as long as you use them correctly and get the car centered on the ramps. Just make sure you pull the ebrake and block the tires that arent on the ramps and you will be fine. I used my ramps all the time and they work great. they are low enough so i can pull up on them but they also get the car pretty high off the ground to do some work. I did my loudmouth and y pipe install with my ramps and it worked great.

ditto...

I use ramps to change oil and such....
block the tires, lock the e-brake, be really careful pulling the car onto the ramps...

I've got a set of the old red metal ones from Sears and have used them for many, many years. Several people I know really like their plastic RhinoRamps that they got from AutoZone ($20 a set I think).

Once I installed the SFC's however, it's easier just to stick the floor jack under there and jack up one entire side at a time and then stick some jackstands under there.

Same here. I use the metal ones and they just barely clear my car. I haven't heard anyone having any problems with the Rhino ramps.

I've got a set of ramps (I don't think they're Rhino ramps? ) that are made of recycled rubber and "stuff".........not sure exactly what they're made of, but they don't slip when you drive up onto them like normal steel ramps do. I've had them since I had my '81 Z28, and they work great for doing stuff like oil changes and small jobs under the car (changing plugs, etc.).

Since my car has GFX though, it won't drive straight onto the ramps, so I have to lay a couple pieces of 2" X 4" in front of the tires to get up onto the ramps!

Rhino Ramps are great for our cars. I've used them for 4 years on my 97 Z28 and now my 02 Z28 and it's a life saver in more ways than one

Rhino Ramps all the way, they're perfect for our cars.

I tried to get my car on my old metal ones, hit the gas too hard and broke the ramps. Not to mention the old metal ones weren't wide enough for a 245 section tire.

Just drive your car on the Rhino Ramps, set the parking brake, chock both rear tires, and you're all set.

Talking I use "custom ones" - compliments of my old man !

He made me some bad azz wooden ones that are absolutely fantastic !!

Prior to that, I would put a 2 x 4 on the garage floor lip - that 1" or so rise above the driveway level - and drive up on that.

Tight - but, I could squeeze/reach underneath to get to the drain plug & filter.

I have red metal ramps from K-Mart purchased over 15 years ago, but the nose of the SS is too low to use 'em.

Seems like GM could have made the clearance a little greater - I drag a fair amount coming out of sloped drives.

The chin wnd deflector, mainly, but I have a few scrapes on the bumper paint as well.
