Take this poll please

I'm in the market for tires for the rear only. Stock SS rims "9 in."

My criteria in order of importance:

1) Tread Life
2) Traction in Rain
3) Traction at track.

Please vote on which tire you would choose. This car is my daily driver.

I picked the Firehawks. I have those on my Z.

1. Tread life is really good. I've had mine for about 20k miles now and they're doing well.

2. Wet traction is great. I bought these while living near Seattle (rain central). This was the number one reason for me buying them.

3. Traction at the track sucked. Everytime I launched I would spin like a motherf**ker.

I would buy them again.

Lightbulb I voted for Kumho 712's.

Bear in mind, however, that I have only had experience w/ 555R's & the 712's other than stock GSC's & Eagles.

Kumho = :
  • Life - at least 24K treadlife - probably a lot more if you rotate tires regularly & keep from burning the rears , which I seem to have a problem with. (Whistles innocently.)
  • Wet Weather traction at speed = kickazz ! No problems here doing 70 + in a good rainstorm where conditions & traffic permit.
Off the line in the rain = fugaeetaboutit !
  • Track Traction - ah, here's the rub.

If the track is well prepped, and the wether is warm, you will do well. Last time out I think I was in the 1.8 range for 60's.

In cold weather - no way, Jose. These things get somewhat slick - street or strip.

My .02 - hope it helps.

track tire = bad wet traction, sorter life..

w/e tire you decide to get, you will lose out in one category. you either get a tire better for track/street racing with poor wet traction and a shorter tread life: yokohama's/Nitto 555(r)'s etc. - or - you get a tire with superior wet traction and a longer tread lifespan. i dont think you can have it all. i know thats why your here posting because your looking for a good medium between the two but you need to alter the choices.. youve kinda narrowed it down to where the firehawks are the only reasonable selection on the list.

there are other tires out there that can compete with the firehawk's.. i heard good things about falken Ziex ZE-512's. the only advice i can give you is that i have stock 16x9" on my '99z and i have SP Sport 5000 (All Season, Ultra High Performance) and im not fond of their wet traction.. at all...

The Firehawks cames standard from the factory on my car. They do excellent in the rain which we have been getting a lot of lately around here. The car only has 8000 miles on it but the tires look fine. Don't plan on taking it to the track but the dry traction seems fine as well. Go with the Firehawks.

Discount Tire Direct offers free ground shipping but unfortunately do not carry that tire. You will be fine with Tirerack though, I have ordered 3 sets of tires through them and never had a problem. Good luck.

Hey, Firestone's are $179/tire. That's almost not worth it. Let's say out of nitto's I get 15000 mi. Isn't there a tire out there that I can get maybe a "little" less mileage out of that won't cost me $350.00 just for the tires? Anyone have any other info? Please? Thanks. I'm gonna only get 2 for now for the rear. Thanks in advance guys.

Well, you said in order of importance:

1. Tread life
2. Traction is rain.

Nittos are probably the crappiest in both areas. You may save some cash at first but then you will just have to replace them sooner. Tires aren't cheap.

Yokohama AVS ES100

Check out those tires. They get decent reviews.

Yokohama ES100's.. dont just take my word for it.. not like I havent had Pirelli PZeros, Nittos, Dunlops, BF Goodrich, GoodYears... and yes.. Yokohamas..

For the price there is no other choice. Not only that, but it does killer in the rain and in the dry!

Mine are coming by next week! woo hoo! 28K miles on my GSC's and cords are showing!
