Working in a GM parts dept., I hear this story way too much. Lock your t-tops with the key guys, the latches aren't good enough. GM freakin' engineering.

Did you retrieve the leftlovers off the road?
If not, I hope you enjoy having two keys for your T-Tops.. one for the doors and the original T-top the other for your new one. I found on my LT1 that a tranny shop had launched one of my tops.. I made them retreive it (super simple to remove and replace the tumbler). The T-tops come with a factory tint so unless you ask for even more tinting on them there shouldnt be any need for it..
also, the way you stated that it had shattered would lead me to think that you didnt have any additional tint on the unit as that would keep it together.

Hope this helps!

The t-tops just don't fly off if latched properly. I've seen people just place them on to keep the sun off the seats and then forget later on that they didn't latch them and off they go.
So either you didn't latch them or didn't latch it correctly but I don't see how not latching them correctly is even possible. It either latches or not or, there is no in-between. GM engineering is fine.

Don't worry about two keys,

They can rekey the lock to work with your orginal key. They had to do it with mine when I first bought my car.

If it was a drivers side, you are in luck. I have one from my wrecked 00SS. It is in great shape, and I have a key for it. I want $75 + shipping, FIRM. If you want it, email me. Thanks, & good luck.

You don't need to lock your t-top for it to be latched correctly. You obviously didn't latch it. I've never locked my t-tops and that includes a 90 mile 165 mph race last May 19th during the Silver State Classic. Lock them if you have small kids in the car that might pull on the latch, other than that they are fine unlocked ..... when latched properly !

I agree, locking them does nothing extra to help keep them on. The only thing locking them is good for, is to prevent them from being stolen (But who leaves their car with the windows down alone for a period of time?)
actually I do leave my car with the windows down, but if so, the tops are out as well, safely locked in the trunk. If not, of course i'd lock them.

#2 reason is to prevent passengers from opening the latch during travel. I have almost had this happen several times, I go down an off/on ramp, and the passenger's first instinct is something to hold on to, so they reach for the latch, thinking it's one of those handles trucks have for people to hold on to, but it's not. So you're trying to make the corner and scream at your passenger at the same time, not fun. I then say if you must grab something, grab that handle on the door. (not the latch, the handle you use to close it )

My insurance policy has a zero deductable on glass repairs and replacement. Most policies are this way.

Wouldn't a T-Top fall into that category?
